National Institute for Fitness and Sport Job Description
Job Title: Fitness Instructor Department: Fitness Center 

Reports To: Fitness Center Manager
Job Status: Part-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt
 

 

Must be in final year of pursuing a Health and Human Sciences degree.

 

Fitness Instructor Summary
To ensure the time spent in the Fitness Center produces maximum results for members; circulates all activity areas to ensure proper exercise technique and safe, functioning equipment; maintains participant files; supports co-workers in the development and implementation of fitness and wellness incentive programs, aids in development and instruction of group classes for participants; works to deliver exceptional customer service to all members and guests through personal interaction and aggressive hospitality; carries out other projects as assigned. As a non-exempt employee, you are expected to work no more than 40 hours per week. If you feel overtime is necessary, you must contact your supervisor for prior approval. Your work week may be adjusted accordingly to accommodate overtime.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Ensure the time spent in the Fitness Center produces maximum results for members:
•  Supervises exercise activities in the fitness facility.
•  Interact with fitness center members to ensure that exercise programs are carried out in a safe manner; utilizes computer software to locate member information.
•  Participate in activities and continuing education opportunities to improve professional 
skills.
•  Attend staff meetings when feasible to learn information on NIFS issues and Fitness Center matters.
•  Reports facility problems to Fitness Center Manager or Fitness Center Assistant 
Manager.
Circulate all activity areas to ensure proper exercise technique and safe, functioning equipment:
•  Always strive to help someone improve his or her technique and to get the most out of their time spent at NIFS.
•  Offer exercise advice and recommend new and appropriate exercises to members.
•  Help members monitor their intensity and educate them on proper cardio training zones.
Deliver exceptional customer service to all members and guests through personal interaction and aggressive hospitality:
•  Recommend exercise programs according to ACSM guidelines.
•  Instruct participants on proper exercise techniques, use a variety of aerobic and resistance exercise equipment to develop knowledgeable, safe, and effective programs.
•  Communicate with members to discover their interests, concerns, and health goals.
•  Greet all members by name and motivate them to continue their fitness program.
•  Greet guests and establish a relationship to discover their interest and goals and discuss membership options with them.
•  Maintain a positive work relationship with co-workers.
•  Maintain cleanliness and safety throughout Fitness Center.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty

•  Education and/or Experience
o In final year of pursuing a baccalaureate degree in exercise physiology, kinesiology or health 
education from an accredited college or university.
• Computer Skills
o Once trained, the employee should be capable of accurately entering appointments into our DataTrak system.
o Once trained, the employee should be capable of accurately using the NIFS Payroll system.
• Certifications
o Current CPR/AED/First Aid certification required.
o Trained in Universal Precautions annually (provided by NIFS).
o Working towards one or more primary certifications in the field: ACSM EP-C, ACSM CPT, NASM, NSCA 
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and USAW Sports Performance Certification.
• Language Skills
o Strong organizational and communication skills: communication and technical skills to interact 
and instruct effectively with individuals in a large fitness facility required.
o Ability to read, understand, and write simple instructions and short correspondence.
o Ability to speak effectively in English.
• Other Requirements
o Ability to work weekends and evening hours.
o May, at any time, be required to submit to and successfully pass a thorough background check 
and/or drug screen.
o Regular and reliable transportation to and from work.
o Maintain familiarity with and abide by the policies stated in the NIFS Employee Handbook.
o Performs other duties as assigned.
