Aperture is a nonprofit publisher that leads conversations around photography worldwide. From our base in New York, Aperture connects global audiences and supports artists through our acclaimed quarterly magazine, books, exhibitions, digital platforms, public programs, limited-edition prints, and awards. Established in 1952 to advance “creative thinking, significantly expressed in words and photographs,” Aperture champions photography’s vital role in nurturing curiosity and encouraging a more just, tolerant society. With a capital campaign and development of strategic plan underway, Aperture is preparing to move from Chelsea to a new, permanent home on 380 Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side of New York City in 2024.
Department Overview:
This position will operate at the intersection of the Digital Strategy, Design, and Communications, providing support for the visual and digital expression of Aperture. Primary areas of focus will include short-form video development, social media asset creation, and animated design work.
The Digital Media & Design Work Scholar will:
Report to the Digital Strategist and work with Aperture’s digital and design teams to create:
- Short-form video projects in support of Aperture programs and initiatives
- Social media assets in support of Aperture programs and promotions, including static and animated assets for Instagram
- Concepting and executing additional design assets, as needed, for unique Aperture subbrands and initiatives
- Research and support for web, market research, and UX/UI best practices

- Design software skills
- Interdepartmental collaboration; including exposure to editorial and publishing
General Work Scholar Responsibilities:
- Further develop knowledge of photography as well as Aperture’s mission, publications, exhibitions, and programs
- Complete pre-, mid-, and post-term evaluations
- Participate in jurying the Aperture Portfolio Prize (Spring term)
- Work occasional events and extended hours (paid hours)
Requirements:
- Short-form video editing expertise and animation experience
- Expertise with Adobe After Effects, Premier Pro, InDesign and working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator required (all on Mac)
- Figma and UI/UX experience a plus
- Experience with Wordpress and Mailchimp a plus.
- Strong layout and typography skills, creativity, attention to detail, and self motivation will enhance a candidate’s application
- One should also possess a willingness to triple-check everything before it is routed or shared
- Curiosity about different platforms, mediums, and visual content
- Interest in investigating solutions independently and to try out different visual solutions and approaches

Aperture will be offering a salary of $18 per hour for this position. This position start in January 2024. This position is part-time at 24 hours a week.
