The Natatorium has been a fixture in the community since 1982 and has hosted hundreds of state, regional, national, and international events along with providing aquatic programming to IUPUI and surrounding communities.

General Position Function:

Responsible for everyday operational tasks at the IU Natatorium. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: lifeguarding, participant safety, and maintaining skills.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Aquatic Risk Management: Life-guarding; scanning assigned zones of protection, patron rule enforcement, proper time management of rotations and providing safety assistance, rescues, emergency actions and first aid when necessary according to the IU Natatorium and Jeff Ellis and Associates Risk Management protocol. Immediately reports any hazardous conditions to supervisor including inability to properly scan zone due to water clarity or other conditions. Will maintain minimum number of in-service hours required by the department.
  2. Aquatic Facility Maintenance and Operations: Will assist with daily cleaning/sanitizing around pool deck and lifeguard office. Will assist with answering phones, communication with meet hosts, employees, and customer service. Will assist with meet set-up and tear-down; involving lifting and/or other labor intensive duties.
  3. Documentation: May assist with water testing, accident reports, and other operational reports and records.
  4. Policy and Procedure: Follows all policies and procedures as described in the Indiana University employee manual and all other IU Natatorium protocols, policies and guidelines including those outlined by Ellis and Associates Risk Management standards and other affiliated organizational values and protocols.
  5. Emotional maturity, flexibility, and problem-solving skills.
  6. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  1. Must be at least 16 years old
  2. Must be able to meet the Indiana University background check standards for the Programs Involving Children (PIC) policy.
  3. Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language
  4. Must be able to complete: Jeff Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training Program offered at the IU Natatorium
  5. Previous lifeguard experience preferred but not required
  6. Must be available to work some weekend shifts every month

Knowledge/skills/abilities/physical demands required

  1. Ability to swim 200 yards continuously; tread water for 2 minutes without using hands; retrieve 10lb diving brick from 18ft of water.
  2. Ability to enforce rules and follow all established protocol and policies.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, fellow lifeguards, lifeguard supervisors, Aquatics Program Manager, and other full-time staff.
  4. Ability to reason, solve problems, and manage conflicts.
  5. Must remain current with all required licenses, certifications, and in-service requirements.
  6. Must demonstrate satisfactory performance ratings on all safety and operational audits including demonstrating a rescue ready performance level at all times.
  7. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
