Job Description 

Title:  Communications Assistant 

Reports to: Student Programming Coordinator 

Department: Student and Family Connections 

Compensation: $13.00/hour  

Summary:  

The Communications Assistant manages and measures departmental social media accounts for Fraternity and Sorority Life and Civic Engagement in collaboration with staff members to engage students, to ensure high quality, and to maintain consistent messaging.  Managing multiple projects and working with various individuals throughout the year is a significant part of the position. Applicants should possess a strong work ethic, have a high level of personal accountability, good time management skills and an ability to take initiative.  

  

Duties and Responsibilities 

Marketing and Promotions Support 

Coordinate content production and publishing on unit social media accounts in collaboration with professional staff members. 

Develop content calendars guided by strategy to ensure a robust, cohesive, and consistent social media presence for areas within unit including Fraternity and Sorority Life and Civic Engagement. 

Identify best practices for social media usage through proactive research on strategies for reaching college students and on the purposes and functions of various platforms. 

Anticipate, plan for, and capitalize upon social media trends. 

Create and cultivate communities by engaging IU Indianapolis students through discussions on social media platforms. 

Review social media analytics to guide content creation and scheduling. 

Submit monthly social media analytic reports to the Assistant Program Director for Student Organizations, Assistant Program Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life, and the Associate Director.  

Assist with tabling efforts for the unit throughout the academic year to help promote Fraternity and Sorority Life and student involvement.  

Create various PowerPoint presentations for the unit.  

Draft and design monthly newsletters for various initiatives within the unit utilizing Salesforce platform alongside professional staff members.  

Use the SFC camera to take photographs and record videos of departmental programs and initiatives; edit and prepare photos in alignment with promotions plans.  

Use social media management systems such as Hootsuite. 

Adhere to the SFC brand identity and strategy, IU Indianapolis Division of Student Affairs social media and style guides, and Indiana University Communications and Marketing guidelines 

Engage in collaborative brainstorming with the rest of the team on promotions aspects 
 

 

General Responsibilities 

 

Establish and maintain an understanding of the policies and procedures outlined under Student and Family Connections. 

Attend all scheduled area team and all-team meetings (typically 4-6 meetings per semester), and training sessions (typically held the last two weekdays prior to the first day of class in the fall and spring semesters). 

Adhere to the established dress code. 

Other duties as assigned. 
 
Minimum Qualifications: 
 
Education and Experience: 

Candidates must have at least a 2.0 cumulative IU Indianapolis GPA (or be a first-semester student) and be in judicial good standing at the time of application. 

Undergraduate candidates and staff members must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours, and graduate candidates and staff members must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours. 
 
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: 

Experience working in customer service. 

Strong verbal and listening skills, good work ethic, detail oriented, excellent time and project management skills, good computer and data entry skills, and strong interpersonal relationship skills. 

Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities: 

Previous peer or student organization leadership experience. 

Previous experience working with marketing and promotions such as social media. 

Knowledge and understanding of IU Indianapolis student organization operations and event planning policies.
