R&D GREET Trainer

 

Support your user base in harnessing the Research and Development Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Technologies R&D GREET model—a lifecycle assessment tool—to enhance their environmental stewardship, improve their operational efficiency, and position themselves as leaders in research and development within their industry!?   

 

The R&D GREET lifecycle analysis model allows users to analyze the energy and emissions impacts of a variety of advanced vehicle technologies and transportation fuel pathways. 


 

With support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) - the developer of the R&D GREET model - and the Great Plains Institute (GPI) are developing a Train-the-Trainer program.  


 

The program’s goal is to grow the model’s user base and make it easier to learn. ANL and GPI will select and train a small, specialized cohort of trainers from public interest organizations. These trainers will then be equipped to educate a broader set of users on the model through their own workshops.  


 

Through this program, ANL and GPI hope to train a variety of potential R&D GREET users, with two key focus groups:

  • People working in public-interest organizations (e.g. state government, universities, research, NGO sector, trade associations)
  • People from historically marginalized communities, specifically people of color, First Nations, and low-income communities, or people who intend to use the GREET model to benefit those communities

Organization Expectations


 

Organizations must be public interest organizations (e.g., nonprofits, trade associations, academic organizations, or similar). Priority will be given to organizations that can commit resources to trainers participating in this program, such as assistance in organizing and setting up training sessions. Additionally, preference will be given to organizations that can support training users from historically marginalized communities—specifically people of color, First Nations, and low-income communities.

  • Have expertise in, the ability to connect with, or interest in analyzing, the primary alternative transportation fuel sectors covered by the R&D GREET model: bioenergy, ethanol, renewable natural gas, biodiesel and renewable diesel, maritime energy, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrogen, carbon capture, battery electric vehicles, and biochemicals.
  • Support the R&D GREET trainer(s) participating in the train-the-trainer program from your organization
  • Demonstrate a vested interest in enhancing public knowledge of the R&D GREET model

Trainer Expectations


 

Trainers must reside in and have the authority to work in the United States. Additionally, they must be able to participate in expanding R&D GREET modeling within their user community for at least three years.

  • Host in-person workshops (totaling a minimum of 24 hours in length) on behalf of ANL, which has the right to ensure that consistent and appropriate material is provided during these workshops. ANL will provide a stipend to cover workshop costs (e.g., venue, catering) and trainers’ time spent on the workshops and technical assistance. Trainers may charge their attendees a reasonable fee to cover regional training expenses beyond what ANL offers if needed.
  • Optional opportunity to provide technical assistance associated with preferred topic areas for the GREET website by responding to user-submitted questions received at the Argonne GREET support email (estimated time commitment of 10 hours across a period of two months per year for at least three years)

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

Trainers should have a background in conducting lifecycle assessments and providing training and education. The train-the-trainer program will provide further training.

  • Experience with specific applications in carbon and emissions accounting like R&D GREET
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to prepare and convey technical material in concise, plain language to various audiences
  • Excellent organizational skills, specifically time, deadline, and project management skills with the ability to multitask
  • Proactive and self-motivated
  • Experience working on a diverse team and with different communication styles
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint
  • Skilled in math, data management, spreadsheet analysis, and graphical data interpretation
  • Technical problem-solving skills: ability to identify solutions to challenges that arise

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in industry ecology, environmental science, atmospheric science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, agriculture, physics, or related field or relevant proven skills and experience
  • Experience in additional environmental science areas such as soil carbon, land use, or forestry
  • Experience developing and conducting training programs on technical applications
  • Experience with analytical and computer programming software packages such as JavaScript, Python, R, and GIS

 

Requirements

 

Distribution Potential: 

Trainers will be housed in a primarily public-interest organization, not a for-profit organization, that is willing to commit to R&D GREET training.  


 

Time Commitment and Availability:

Trainers must commit to providing at least one training workshop, with an audience of at least 25 potential users, in their geographic region per year. In addition to leading the training workshops, trainers can opt in to provide technical assistance associated with their preferred topic areas for the GREET website for two months/year under the program for at least three years.   


 

Knowledge: 

After completing the initial training program (estimated to take two months or less), trainers must maintain their proficiency in the model and modules by attending annual in-person workshops and periodic webinars. Trainers must understand the key functionalities, model structure, simulation steps and workflows, data management and processes, and unique modeling features for specific technology areas, including hydrogen, electricity, sustainable aviation fuel, and other low-carbon technologies.


 

Geography: 

Trainers must reside in and have the authority to work in the United States. Trainers must also be close to a major metropolitan area and able to travel to a major metropolitan area to provide their workshops.
