Marine Mammal And Animal Care Intern Winter/Spring Semester

MARINE MAMMAL AND ANIMAL CARE  

INTERNSHIP POSITION 

Job Description 

Department: Marine Mammal and Animal Care                   Location: Pigeon Forge, TN 

Reports to: Intern & Volunteer Coordinator  

Intern Status: Seasonal 

Hours: AM shift times; 9:30am-6:30pm. 

PM shift varies depending on show schedule but are as follows; 11:00am-8:00pm, 1:30pm-10:30pm 

Position Summary: 

Ocean Connections is looking for dedicated individuals to join our internship program in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. This is a non-paid Animal Care position that will help applicants gain knowledge of the care, husbandry, and training of pinnipeds, macaws, dogs, and ducks. This is an excellent opportunity for students, recent graduates, or anyone interested in the animal care field to learn more about the daily responsibilities of caring for animals in professional care. Interns will obtain knowledge by observing and working with experienced trainers daily. Intern duties include but are not limited to; cleaning of animal habitats, daily facility cleaning, diet preparation, record keeping, assisting/observing animal training sessions, animal enrichment, assisting/observing shows, assisting/observing animal interactions, and assisting/observing public education. Ocean Connections provides both credit and non-credit internship opportunities. 

Our Internship program requires a commitment of 300 for the winter/spring semester 

Winter/Spring: 300 hours; from January to May (varies based on weekly commitment) 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

● Clean and maintain all assigned areas located within the department 

● Prepare animal diets 

● Help maintain habitat cleanliness of animal habitats according to established procedures 

● Adhere to all USDA/AMMPA policies regarding husbandry, records, and health 

● Perform related duties as assigned 

● Comply with safety policies, practices, and procedures 

● Provide exceptional guest service 

Qualifications: 

● Must be at least 18 years of age 

● Must be able to understand and follow written and verbal instructions. 

● Must agree to all Ocean Connections policies and release forms. 

● Must be able to commit to the required hours. Weekends and holidays are required. 

● Must be agile with a good sense of balance to maneuver around the exhibits. 

● Must be able to lift 50 pounds. 

● Must be able to adapt to a changing work environment 

● Must be self-motivated and able to work solo or in a team setting
