Job Summary:
This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Development Engineer position for the College of Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU ).
The Development Engineer will primarily reside at the O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory (HWRL ). The position will provide technical support for testing structural specimens, geotechnical systems and specimens, and hydraulic structures, among other types of large- to full-scale engineering experiments.
The position will support the construction and installation of test specimens, reaction frames, hydraulic control systems, and instrumentation. They will be responsible for overseeing the safety training of laboratory users and ensuring safety practices are observed by users. The position will support the operation of research equipment and data acquisition systems. The position will support demobilization of projects, including specimen removal and disposal, as well as instrument recovery. They will collaborate in the development of new experimental protocols and must be able to work productively and safely with fellow staff, faculty, visiting researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and industry clients. They must also have strong teamwork and communication skills, including both written and oral. The position requires creativity, troubleshooting, good judgment, and the ability to recognize and handle new and unique challenges presented by a wide array of different research projects. This is a hands-on position, and the work climate can be challenging including summer heat and winter cold in a non-air-conditioned space.
The O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory at Oregon State University is a leading center for research and education that hosts several experimental facilities in structural, coastal and ocean, geotechnical, and transportation engineering.

Key Responsibilities
45% Project setup, deployment, and recovery Preparation of the facility for testing, deployment of physical models, supporting structures, modification of layout and instrumentation, model recovery and clean up. Deployment of instrumentation, sensors, signal conditioning equipment, and data acquisition systems. Includes cabling of all units including video systems. Detailed and careful record keeping of instrumentation setup including wiring details and physical locations are critical. Setup information will be checked, logged, verified, and uploaded to the sensor database. Recovery of all instrumentation, sensors, and data acquisition (DAQ ), cleaning and storage of specimens, tools, instruments and equipment.
20% Project Operations, testing, and data analysis Conduct physical model testing experiments. Includes DAQ and hydraulic actuator operations, checking and verification of data collection, support of new testing procedures and analytical protocols, quality control and quality assurance.
10% Project Design and Consultation Support the design and planning of research projects in collaboration with OSU COE professors, HWRL staff, and visiting researchers. Includes evaluation and assessment, recommendations for better and more efficient designs that may further advance research outcomes, reduce costs, and make optimal use of site capabilities and resources. Ensure that necessary instrumentation, supplies, and materials are prepared and available when project setup begins.
10% Facility maintenance, research instrument and equipment development, calibration, and maintenance. Support and execute suitable preventive maintenance and repairs of existing equipment, including experimentation tools, lifting equipment, hydraulic oil power systems, actuators, rigging and reaction frame structures. Maintenance of existing instrumentation and data acquisition equipment. Identification of problems in sensors.
10% Health and Safety oversight and enforcement throughout the facility.
Assesses training needs of lab users with different backgrounds and experiences; assists supervisor in providing appropriate instruction to meet unit/customer goals.
5% Training, professional development, and learning. Active involvement in training, professional development and learning, including identification of new research technologies and experimental techniques, use of equipment and tools, and the development of plans to implement new research technologies.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
What We Would Like You to Have
• An associate’s degree in a relevant area (i.e., Mechatronics, Machine Tool Technology, Welding, etc.)
• Experience with the safe operation and general maintenance of heavy equipment, hydraulic power systems, power tools, forklifts, and cranes
• Field or laboratory experience including operations in industry or facilities related to engineering and science
• Concrete, wood and steel-working skills, including welding
• Prior experience in engineering laboratories for structural or geotechnical engineering or coastal and ocean engineering
• Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD (or equivalent) design software
• Experience in a collaborative and hands-on construction environment to setup, test, and demobilize large laboratory projects
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
• Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
• In rare occasions, work after 5:00 pm or during weekends will be necessary.
• The work requires heavy lifting, operating heavy equipment, working outdoors, working indoors in non-air-conditioned space, working at elevation, extended periods of standing, physical exertion, and traversing uneven surfaces.
