Job description
The Fairbanks School of Public Health's Center for Public Health Practice seeks a motivated student to support its service contract with the Marion County Public Health Department's School Liaison Program. This position offers valuable hands-on experience in public health, health education, and healthcare administration, focusing on community outreach.
The School Liaison employee will support and facilitate health education in K-12 schools. Responsibilities include maintaining efficient clinic operations, protecting the confidentiality of Protected Health Information (PHI), performing administrative tasks, and providing translation services if possible. The ideal candidate will strictly adhere to PHI guidelines while contributing to the vaccination initiative's success.
Marion County schools face significant health inequalities. Our program aims to address these by preventing disease, promoting health, and protecting K-12 staff and students. The team includes RNs, Community Health Workers, data entry staff, and a program manager. With Marion County educating 16% of Indiana's students, interns will amplify the impact of the School Health Liaison Program by providing training and support.
Key Competencies:
Oral and written communication skills
Ability to learn and deliver presentations on public health issues (Stop the Bleed, Narcan/SUD, etc.)
Experience with Microsoft Office Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
Adheres to ethical and legal principles and Marion County Public Health Department and Indiana University policies in the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of data and information
Flexibility with multiple tasks
Ability to work independently
Job Responsibilities:
Supporting community outreach and education efforts
Tracking attendees, supplies, and contacts
Adhering to ethical and confidentiality standards in data handling
Associated Job Duties:
Assist at MCPHD as needed with other School Liaison tasks and responsibilities
Assist staff vaccine clinics as needed
Qualifications/Skills:
Education/Experience:
- Preferred but not required fourth year undergrad student in public health or related field e.g., social work, allied health, nursing
- Bi-lingual (Spanish, Creole, Burmese, Arabic) preferred but not required
Knowledge and Skills:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Culturally competent: ability to work in a multi-culture environment.
- High level of concentration, accuracy, attention to detail
- Critical thinking ability.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Strong organizational skills.
Work Environment:
- Standard office environment at FSPH office in the Health Sciences building.
- Some physical effort associated with filing, carrying of supplies for health fairs, travel between campus and program site(s).
- This position requires some travel and will require a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Additional Information
Salary - $11 per hour for 10 hours per week for fall and winter semester
Schedule is flexible and mostly within typical K-12 school hours.
Mileage to clinic locations and off-campus meetings is reimbursable at the applicable IU rate.
This position is available for Internship credit if needed.
