Student Assistant - Building Manager

Job Summary: The Building Manager is the primary supervisor of evening and weekend operations of Reeve Memorial Union and Blackhawk Commons. They are responsible for all functions occurring during their shift, working with student, faculty, staff, and guest users of the Reeve Memorial Union services and facilities, as well as oversight of other student employees working in the facility.

Building Managers are additionally responsible for security of the building, safety of its patrons, decision making in regard to irregular situations or requests and response to emergency situations, all according to Reeve Union and University policy.

Building Managers represent the Union management while on duty.

A. Primary job responsibilities:

1. Represents Reeve Memorial Union management regarding building and university policies and procedures.

  • To represent the Reeve Memorial Union philosophy of service with professionalism and maturity. To represent the Reeve Memorial Union administration in their absence.
  • To be the primary contact person regarding operational concerns for all Reeve Memorial Unions employees, including the food service contractor, when the Director and staff are out of the building.
  • To be familiar with and to enforce all Reeve Memorial Union policies regarding the functioning of its facility, its personnel, and its programs.
  • To be responsible for decision making in response to irregular situations and requests.
  • To communicate clearly with Reeve Memorial Union management regarding problems or situations that requires attention during regular business hours.

2. Facilitates events and programs scheduled in the Union.

  • To complete all procedures to open Reeve Memorial Union on weekends so that user areas and operations are ready for business at opening time.
  • To check all meeting areas, in conjunction with the Lead Ops, for proper set-ups and make changes if necessary.
  • To set-up, test and provide instruction on the operation of audio/visual equipment when required.
  • To be able to complete minor maintenance when necessary or to respond immediately to any maintenance situations that involves safety, potential damage, or critical appearance of the facility.
  • To be alert to energy conservation by a systematic closing of building areas and turning off lights as areas or rooms empty.
  • To be aware of resources and be prepared to make decisions regarding scheduling, use of equipment, or use of facility.
  • To oversee the provision of technical services including, but not limited to, sound, lighting, and staging.

3. Responsible for overseeing retail operations.

  • To be responsible for managing all cash handling operations for the Titan Central, Titan Underground, Copy This!!, Student Leadership and Involvement Center and programs of Reeve affiliated student organizations.
  • To be responsible for obtaining cash bags from the safe as required for cash operations in the Reeve Memorial Union, verifying startup dollar amounts and facilitating bill/coin exchanges for cash operations as necessary.
  • To be responsible for general student employee supervision including troubleshooting attendance, dress and activity issues.
  • To be responsible for operation and security of the safe, Titan Central, main office, art gallery and the accounting area.
  • To be responsible for closing all cash registers at day end and returning cash bags to the secured accounting area.

4. Responsible for building security, safety of customers and employees, and emergency procedures.

  • To be responsible on building rounds to ensure the needs of customers are being met, and all operations are functioning successfully. Respond to situations requiring attention.
  • To be in Reeve Memorial Union or Blackhawk Commons at all times while on duty, available to respond to circumstances, requests or emergencies. Responsible for building closing at the appropriate time including complete lock up and adjustment of utilities.
  • To supervise the use of walkie-talkies and overhead music equipment so that it is used in a reasonable and intended manner.
  • To prepare special reports relating to the Student Building Manager shift such as accident reports, Student Building Manager log, etc.
  • To monitor conduct of patrons and employees in the building and respond to ensure compliance with standard policy and procedures.
  • To be responsible for safety and security of patrons and employees in the building according to the standard policy and procedures. This requires completion of building rounds on a regular basis.
  • To be aware of emergency resources and procedures and to be able to respond to emergencies in calm, rational, efficient and effective manner, or call for assistance as needed.
  • To be responsible to make recommendations to Reeve Memorial Union staff for maintenance, improvement or innovation relating to any of the above areas of responsibility.

5. Provide excellent customer service for all building services, functions and areas, as required.

B. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Building Managers must have the self-confidence and abilities to accept a leader/manager role in Reeve Memorial Union. They must be able to work well with the Reeve Memorial Union patrons and employees in a facilitator/supervisory role. They must present themselves as well groomed, self-disciplined and personable to represent Reeve Memorial Union in a professional manner. T

hey must be able to make sound, timely decisions in relation to irregular situations or requests. The position prefers one to two years experience of working as a student employee of Reeve Memorial Union, or comparable experience.

Basic knowledge of Union operations, maintenance, Titan Central, Titan Underground, Copy This!!, Student Leadership and Involvement Center, Technical Services and other retail establishments is preferred.

Dress Code Required.

The position requires a clean, professional look with dress pants and shoes. Ragged or revealing clothes, sweatpants, and headgear are unacceptable attire. Uniform shirt and name tag provided.

Hours of Work.

Hours are primarily during evenings and weekends, and will vary with scheduled events and operation of Reeve Memorial Union. Building Managers will work one eight (8) hour shift one evening per week and rotating shifts on weekends. Total hours will average 15-20 per week during academic year.

Summer work (up to 40 hours) is required.

C. Requirements

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Use of various software (25Live Reservation System, Microsoft & Google applications)
