Communications Intern

Jo Communications, a dynamic, woman-owned and women-led creative communications agency based in Chicago, is seeking a Communications Intern beginning Fall 2024.

Jo was born out of a passion for design and a deep appreciation for its influence on the way we live our lives, including its effect on how we work, play, engage, and connect. It exposes and expresses our views of the world, our culture, our communities, our individuality, and our humanity. At Jo, our vibrant and forward-thinking team specializes in harnessing the power of traditional media, social media, content creation, and more to craft compelling narratives for our clients in the design and lifestyle industries.

As our Communications Intern, you'll have the opportunity to assist with a variety of tasks — both client-facing and internal — that will lay the foundation for a career in communications, all under the guidance of our experienced team members. Your weekly responsibilities will include:

Media Relations:

  • Research and create targeted media lists, including Chicago and national press.
  • Create thoughtful press pitches and supporting materials, i.e. pitch graphics, press kit assets, talking points, and more.
  • Research award and speaking opportunities for clients.
  • Support ongoing media tracking and reporting updates.

Social Media:

  • Engage daily with clients’ audiences to build relationships.
  • Research social media and industry trends to keep strategies innovative.
  • Contribute to crafting monthly social media calendars with compelling copy, strategic imagery, and graphic/video content creation.
  • Assist in the analysis and creation of social media reports, encompassing key metrics, insights, and opportunities for growth.

Communications:

  • Aid in developing and uploading blogs, newsletters, and other content for clients.
  • Participate in client meetings and creative brainstorm sessions, take notes, and share insights + ideas with account teams.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and lend ideas to the Jo team.
  • Assist with organization of account materials, including client photography and assets.

Qualifications:

  • Self-starter with a proactive approach and eagerness to learn.
  • Strong writing skills and a creative mindset.
  • Proficiency with social media tools (including Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and TikTok) and an understanding of the evolving landscape.
  • Experience with graphic design and photo/video editing.
  • Creative problem-solver with a positive attitude.
  • Passion for the design, lifestyle, and related industries.

Additional Details:

  • The internship involves approximately 20 hours per week. While a six-month commitment, at minimum, is preferred, the internship timeline can be accommodated according to school scheduling as needed. There is potential for extending the term of the internship.
  • We offer flexible scheduling to accommodate class requirements or part-time work, with schedules set prior to the internship's start and changes coordinated at least two weeks in advance.
  • If located in Chicago, interns are encouraged to work from our office when possible in alignment with the local team’s in-office schedule.
