Wildlife Technician, Advanced

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Bureau of Wildlife Management is recruiting to fill four (4) permanent ADVANCED WILDLIFE TECHNICIAN positions to perform activities which encourage, promote, and enhance sound management of wildlife habitats and ecosystems as well as provide the environmental, economic, and social benefits of healthy wildlife communities. Our mission is to help all people connect with and use wildlife resources.
Current vacancies are headquartered out of the following locations:
- White River Marsh Wildlife Area in Berlin, WI - Green Lake County
- Navarino Wildlife Area - Shawano County
- Mead Wildlife Area in Milladore, WI - Wood County (2 positions)
The Advanced Wildlife Technician independently performs technical, administrative, and paraprofessional activities related to the Department’s wildlife programs and works under the general guidance and supervision of the Wildlife or Property Supervisor of the designated area. This Wildlife Technician plans and conducts habitat development and maintenance projects on public lands which includes the operation of heavy equipment and utility vehicles. The person in this position is responsible for conducting mechanical and chemical habitat management techniques including prescribed fire operations. This position works within teams, external agencies and the public and assists in mentoring, supporting and guiding members to assure successful team operations and program implementation.

Salary Information
Starting pay for this position is $25.22 per hour. This position is classified as a Wildlife Technician – Advanced in pay schedule and range 06 – 14.

Qualifications
Your letter of qualifications and resume are very important parts of your application and are used during our evaluation process to determine your qualifications as they relate to the job. Please describe the below qualifications in your resume and letter of qualifications to be considered for this position:
Minimally qualified candidates will have ALL of the following:
- Experience operating and maintaining heavy machinery such as skid-steers, agricultural tractors, excavators, etc.
- Experience manipulating habitats such as mechanical manipulation, burn brake installation/maintenance, herbicide application, wetland infrastructure maintenance, etc.
- Education, training, or experience in animal husbandry, wildlife diseases monitoring, and/or biological surveys such as mammal tagging, waterfowl banding, track surveys, animal surveys, surveys to estimate population, aerial surveys, deer aging, etc. (including courses completed & paid/unpaid exp)
In addition, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following:
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), Class A*
- Experience with prescribed fire operations or Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) credential*
- Experience with facility and/or public use infrastructure maintenance
* These credentials will be part of training on the job during the first 12 months of employment if currently not held.
