Why does the job exist?

 

The Curator of Southwest Memories creates memorable Museum experiences through exhibitions and programs that connect visitors with New Mexico's vast and diverse history. The position is central to implementation of the NMHM interpretive strategy (Framework for the Future) and management of the Museum's collections. The Curator contributes to the museum's vision by offering a welcoming place for exploration of multifaceted views on history, dialog that bridges social and cultural divides, and reflection on the conditions needed for a more resilient, just, and sustainable future.

How does it get done?

The Curator of Southwest Memories reports to the Supervisor of Curation and Exhibits at the New Mexico History Museum and is part of a five-person team focused on creation of meaningful experiences for museum visitors. This position will oversee to completion new exhibitions, related publications and programs in accordance with the Framework for the Future and approved by the NMHM Executive Director. 

In broad terms projects are expected to exemplify principles of inclusion, relevance, and engagement and may require significant outreach to rural and Native communities. Some projects involve work outside the incumbent's primary areas of academic study. Exhibitions require coordination with teams of specialized designers, fabricators, and installers and may involve integration of content by contracted subject matter experts. Collateral responsibilities include training of docents, preparation of grant proposals, management of grants, support for fundraising, organization of special programs, management of contracts, preparation of articles or catalogs, and supporting realization of the Museum's purpose and vision.

Who are the customers?

 

This position will serve the general public, researchers, scholars, and supporters of the New Mexico History Museum.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has the following: (1) MA degree in History, Art History, or Museum Studies (concentration in New Mexico or Southwest history), (2) Exhibitions and publications on New Mexico and/or Southwest history; (3) Direct experience In collaborating with arts and cultural organizations domestically and Internationally; (4) Direct experience working with lenders, donors, and supporters In exhibition development; (5) Experience managing multiple projects in a fast-paced office setting.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Museum Studies, Museology, Art, Art History, Art Administration, Anthropology, American Studies, Archaeology, Curatorial Studies, History, Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies, Liberal Arts, Public History, or Paleontology and four (4) years of experience in exhibit development, collections management, curation, creative writing, conducting research in specialty area of a museum, and working with historical concepts. Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.  Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Some travel within the state may be required.
