Senior Park Aide (Seasonal)

The reporting location for this position is Red Rock Canyon State Park at 37749 Abbott Drive, Cantil, CA. This position will work under the direction of the State Park Interpreter III.

 
The Senior Park Aide staff member is responsible for assisting with the efficient operation of the Interpretation & Education Programs at Red Rock Canyon State Park. This includes but is not limited to coordinating the self-guided/docent-led hikes, school field trip (in-person and virtual), Junior Ranger and scout programs; outreach and marketing, roving interpretation; developing interpreting programs; staffing the visitor center/museum as needed; interpreting outdoor areas, leading volunteer work groups, and generally supporting the educational, interpretive, and volunteer management programs.

Essential functions: Demonstrate ability to follow directions; learn work procedures and park rules and regulations quickly; complete timesheets correctly by required date and check State calendars and emails at the end of each shift for any changes; perform varied manual tasks; meet and interact with the public successfully; willingness to work weekends, holidays, and/or odd or irregular hours; wear and maintain prescribed uniform or period attire while maintaining Department appearance standards; be reliable and courteous at all times to visitors, volunteers, and staff.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

 This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

Duties: 

  • Coordinating the self-guided/docent-led hikes, school field trip (in-person and virtual), Junior Ranger and scout programs.

  • Developing interpreting programs.
  • Staffing the visitor center/museum as needed.
  • Interpreting outdoor areas, leading volunteer work groups, and generally supporting the educational, interpretive, and volunteer management programs.

Qualifications:

  • One thousand hours of experience in park operations in a class equivalent in level of responsibility to the class of Park Aide (Seasonal).
  • When driving is a requirement of the job: Possession of a valid driver license of the appropriate class and a safe driving record as documented by the Department of Motor Vehicles within 60 days prior to appointment (A safe driving record is one free from convictions in the past two years for repeated moving violations or a single serious violation, such as drunk or reckless driving.)
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

Or 

  • One year or 1,920 hours of experience in any one of the following: conducting educational programs, recreational programs, or conducting public service programs.
