Peer Support Project Graduate Student Assistant (open to work study and non-work study)

The Longhorn Wellness Center (LWC) is a department in the Division of Student Affairs that promotes student well-being and creates a healthier campus community utilizing a public health approach.
 

The LWC is seeking a Graduate Assistant to support the Longhorn SHARE Project, a mental health and social connection-focused peer support program. Specifically, the GA would assist with outreach, peer recruitment, and administrative activities and lead /facilitate a small project or initiative of their own (TBD depending on experience, interests, and/or career goals; additional training may be provided as needed).
 

With supervision from the Peer Support Project Coordinator, the Graduate Assistant will work collaboratively with the office and campus partners to fulfill the following responsibilities:
 

Responsibilities
The specific responsibilities of this role are flexible depending on the experiences, interests, and strengths of the Graduate Assistant hired, but may include:
 

PEER SUPPORT SERVICES & TRAINING/PEER COHORT SUPPORT

  • Lead an event, project, or campaign that addresses mental health, stigma, help-seeking behaviors, social connection, community-care, etc. by the end of the academic year (TBD).
  • Process incoming SHARE Circle requests and coordinate details between peer facilitator volunteers and faculty, staff, and student leaders who submit requests.
  • Provide support and input for SHARE Support Specialist training / courses, and assist the SHARE Student Advisory Group with cohort community-building activities.

 

PROGRAM OUTREACH & COMMUNICATION

  • Engage in e-mail and in-person outreach to build relationships, foster collaborations, and increase participation of students across campus in Longhorn SHARE Project activities.
  • Assist with tracking outreach activities and updating the program contact list.
  • Participate in the recruitment and group interview process to help select students for the incoming cohort of SHARE Support Specialists.
     

ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIVITIES & PROGRAM ASSESSMENT

  • Assist with responding to emails sent to the program’s general email address.
  • Assist undergraduate intern with program evaluation/assessment activities to capture trends and identify program strengths and opportunities for improvement.
  • Administrative or event support for other Longhorn Wellness Center programs, as needed.

 

Job Details

  • 10 hours/week, paid hourly at $19.00/hour
  • Flexible in-person/remote hours, although some activities will require in-person participation (to be discussed with supervisor)
  • Not eligible for benefits
     

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Arts or Sciences degree from a nationally accredited institution. Graduate degree in progress (Social Work, Communication, Public Health, Psychology, Sociology, Higher Education Leadership, Marketing, Human Dimensions of Organizations, Counselor Education, or related fields preferred)
  • Strong written, verbal, and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, manage a variety of tasks, and take initiative on projects
     

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Experience (through coursework, past/current employment, or other avenues of learning) related to peer support, mentorship, education, counseling & mental health, social work, community organizing, interpersonal communication, health communication, and/or related fields.
  • Skilled in public speaking, group facilitation, and/or community building, particularly in youth or young adult settings.
  • Experience with program or event planning, promotion, and/or evaluation.
  • Familiarity with UT campus and student support resources.
