Wellness Specialist Intern
Our Internship Mission:
To prepare a current college student for entry into the health and fitness fields through a supervised experience that focuses on the practical application of learned theories and knowledge.
Interns will be given opportunity to:
1. Learn how to provide outstanding customer service
2. Personal train & perform fitness assessments
3. Teach group exercise classes
4. Write incentive-based programs to engage wellness center members
5. Give presentations regarding wellness related topics to Dow Chemical employees and wellness center members
6. Gain broad experience, while focusing on individual career interests
Interns will leave Greater Midland Corporate Wellness internship with the following:
1. Fortune 500 corporate wellness facility internship reference from Greater Midland.
2. Experience of sitting in on a Dow regional/global health meeting.
3. Knowledge and skills from attending all Greater Midland group fitness classes.
4. Increased one-on-one skills from personal training and writing programs for Wellness center members.
5. Networking while working alongside the Greater Midland staff and with gym members.
Qualifications
1. Senor Standing in Exercise Science or Health Science 4 year Degree
2. Appropriate and Current Certifications in Group Fitness and Personal Training
3. CPR & First Aid Certifications
4. Excellent People Skills
Basic Functions
Under the direction of the Internship Coordinator and Full Time Wellness Specialist, the Wellness Specialist intern works to ensure Wellness Center members exercise safely and effectively. The Wellness Specialist intern will also be responsible for teaching health education classes, providing personalized instruction, conducting fitness assessments and orientations, and participating in special events.
Essential Functions
Customer Service
1. At least 80% of your time should be used interacting with members.
a. All members should be greeted using their name.
b. Wellness Specialist interns should interact with members during their workout, if appropriate.
c. Wellness Specialist interns should acknowledge members as they arrive/leave.
d. Conduct orientations and personal training sessions in a positive and professional manner.
2. The other 20% of your time should be used for cleaning, projects, etc.
3. During peak times, Wellness Specialist interns should be on the floor at all times.
4. Wellness Specialist interns answer questions to the best of their ability and find answers when necessary.
5. Wellness Specialist interns give orientations, tours of the Wellness Center, information on other operating centers of the Greater Midland, guidance and support to members and Corporate Wellness team members, and represent Corporate Wellness in a positive way at all times.
6. Wellness Specialist interns are responsible for creating a safe environment for members
7. Provide proper first aid treatment when necessary
Room Supervision and Maintenance
1. Room supervision includes Wellness Center and Group Exercise space, where applicable.
2. Room supervision includes being visible on the floor, being prepared to answer questions, giving members assistance as needed, and performing cleaning duties.
3. Wellness Specialist interns recognize when equipment needs to be repaired, mark it as such, and notify supervisor immediately.
4. Wellness Specialist interns do all assigned and/or needed cleaning thoroughly.
Accountability
1. Wellness Specialist interns show up for their shifts on time, in uniform, and ready to work for our members.
2. Wellness Specialist interns begin and end work on schedule.
3. Wellness Specialist interns attend all meetings and training sessions.
Non-Essential Functions
1. Complete, in a timely manner, all requests from supervisor to ensure member satisfaction.
2. Keep all certifications up to date.
3. Perform all other duties as assigned.
Environment
Corporate Wellness sites and Greater Midland facilities; high level of contact with members and community. Various hours that may include early mornings, late evenings, and weekends. At times, Corporate Wellness and Greater Midland sites will be busy and multi-functional. Must be willing to substitute if program staff fails to meet obligations.

Schedule:
Total internship hours are dependent on individual school requirements. Interns are expected to maintain a minimum of 20 hours a week and a minimum of 200 hours. Our facility hours are:
· EDC Wellness Center
o Monday through Friday: 5:00am to 8:00pm
o Saturday: Closed
o Sunday: 9:00am to4:00 pm
· East End Wellness Center
o Monday through Friday: 5:00am to 8:00pm
o Saturday: 8:00am to 3:00pm
o Sunday: Closed
Compensation:
Although the internship is unpaid, an internship with Greater Midland Corporate Wellness offers experience enhancement and knowledge enhancement to prepare students for a career in corporate health and fitness. Greater Midland is recognized as an internship provider by several local colleges, and in many cases, the internship can be used for college credit.
