GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for complex technical work involving the planning, installation, maintenance and inspection of controlled traffic equipment throughout the City to ensure signals and streetlight systems function optimally. Reports to the Administrator of Engineering Projects. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 Responsible for the effective supervision and administration of assigned staff including prioritizing and assigning work, performance management, employee relations, and related activities. Serves as technical expert for all electronic components and configurations related to controlled traffic intersections. 

Responsible for ensuring the proper functioning of all electronic systems and components for conformance to the National Electrical Code and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Virginia Supplement; inspects, calibrates and repairs equipment and wiring at computer controlled traffic intersections. 

Ensures the safety of City equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, watching for overhead utility lines, and checking for traffic and underground utilities; performs routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment; identifies and reports equipment malfunctions; cleans equipment as needed. 

Performs administrative work to include maintaining work order completion records, preparing correspondence, verifying time sheets, and other administrative work as required. 

Assists with ordering and maintaining equipment and supply inventories. 

Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

Requires an Associate’s Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology and 5 years of closely related experience with 2-3 years of lead or supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Graduation from a recognized related apprenticeship program may substitute for up to one year of experience. 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS 

Requires a valid Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements with an acceptable driving record. 

Requires satisfactory results from a medical evaluation; pre-employment substance abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
