Collections Management, Generalist - Inventory Paid-Internships (Temporary, Part-Time).
BACKGROUND
LACMA’s encyclopedic collection includes over 154,000 artworks of all material types from all over the world and from all timespans. The collections management department is responsible for the preservation, storage, and organization of the art collection, and plays a critical role in providing access to the collection for LACMA staff and visiting scholars.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
2 Interns will be selected. Under the supervision of the Assistant Collections Manager, the Collections Management Intern, Generalist will learn about the day-to-day tasks performed by collections management staff and gain a greater knowledge of and hands-on experience working with all object types While shadowing collections management staff, the intern will learn about best preservation practices including housing museum objects for storage and transit, monitoring and maintaining storerooms, learning about our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program, and tracking objects in the database (TMS) and our work request system. The main focus of one internship will be assisting with a large scale inventorying project, including working extensively with our collections management database TMS. The main focus of the other internship will be assisting with rehousing large scale acquisitions, including chemically labeling artworks and inputting information in TMS.
The internship is at an offsite facility in Los Angeles County (not on LACMA’s main campus).
This is a paid internship at 16 hours per week, $17.28 per hour)
Internship period: Both internships are September 16, 2024 – December 13, 2024
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Applicable for current students or recent graduates (*LACMA’s definition of ‘recently graduated’: within 1 year after graduation) who are eligible to work in the US including visa holders with a work permit
- Candidates must be currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an accredited graduate, undergraduate, or community college program
- Preference will be given to candidates who have completed coursework in museum studies, collections management, art history, fundamentals of conservation science, studio art, art education, library science, anthropology, or history
- If you need to meet certain criteria to obtain academic credit, please include them in the cover letter to verify if the LACMA internship can meet the requirements
