Job Summary:

 

The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Ecampus Instructor/Senior Instructor I (Computer Science) position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the School Head.

 

This Instructor position is part of the core team of instructors for the online Computer Science program in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). The instructor will develop and teach a variety of computer science courses in the areas of operating systems, software engineering, and/or computing ethics, with opportunities to develop and teach courses in other areas of the program as needed. Ecampus instructors will work among a supportive group that promotes a positive team-work environment. Key Responsibilities

 

90% – Teaching:

 

• Prepare and/or teach course materials in Computer Science.

• Responsibilities include equipping students with the required skill set, facilitating online classroom discussions, assessing student performance, preparing students to be successful leaders in their chosen profession, and creating an inclusive classroom (e.g. mentoring and supporting students from diverse backgrounds, fostering affirming classroom interactions across difference, challenging structural/cultural barriers that limit movement towards social equity in engineering education and practice).

• As needed, assist in developing courses or course materials and driving curriculum design in the Operating Systems or Software Engineering areas of the curriculum.

• Provide leadership, supervision, and direction for undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants.

 

10% – Service:

 

• Provide service to OSU and the land grant system by working on departmental, division, university, regional and national committees and projects.

 

What You Will Need

 

Minimum Qualifications (For All Ranks)

 

• Master’s in Computer Science or related discipline.

• Demonstrable online and/or in-person teaching or training experience and ability.

• Demonstrated ability to actively engage students.

• Ongoing commitment to identifying strengths and weaknesses in teaching, demonstrated by collecting and assessing teaching data, and seeking resources and guidance to improve.

• Demonstrated knowledge of inclusion and equity issues within Computer Science or other STEM fields.

• Demonstrated commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment.

• Demonstrated knowledge, ability, and/or experience in teaching undergraduate courses in Operating Systems (CPU scheduling, processes & interprocess communication, memory management, file systems, system calls & utilities, kernel and low-level programming), Software Engineering (design patterns, revision control systems, testing & deployment tools & approaches, software development lifecycles, software project management & agile methods), or both.

• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.

 

Additional Minimum Qualifications for appointment at the rank of Senior Instructor I

 

• Four years of professional experience teaching at the college- or university-level

• Sustained record of exceptional teaching at the college or university level as evidenced by student evaluations of teaching.

 

What We Would Like You to Have

 

Preferred Qualifications (For All Ranks)

 

• Experience developing instructional materials for online or hybrid courses.

• Demonstrable knowledge of or experience with online pedagogy and current trends in online education.

• Knowledge of, or certification in, the Quality Matters assessment framework.

• Demonstrated knowledge and ability in computing ethics, including an ability to explain and apply codes of ethics and ethical frameworks, as well as an ability to present and analyze relevant case studies and ethical dilemmas.

• Experience developing instructional materials for online or hybrid courses.

• Demonstrable knowledge of or experience with online pedagogy and current trends in online education.

• Demonstrated potential to teach, or experience teaching a variety of undergraduate Computer Science courses beyond operating systems, software engineering, and computing ethics.

• Familiarity with a breadth of programming tools, frameworks and best practices, including those currently in high demand among employers in the software industry.

• Fluency in C/C++, Python, assembly and/or other low level programming language(s), as well as associated tools (e.g., IDE debuggers or gdb).

• Experience with a Unix/Linux environment and command line tools.

• Industry experience in Computer Science or other engineering fields.

• Proficiency in fundamental Computer Science concepts (i.e., programming languages, theory of computation, and algorithms).

• Experience managing small teams.

 

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

Working conditions vary depending on course(s) assigned.

Other than an in-person faculty retreat that takes place in Corvallis, Oregon in September of each year, all work can be performed remotely.

You must be available to work during normal Pacific time zone business hours.

Travel expenses incurred for the faculty retreat will be reimbursed according to university guidelines.
