Duties
The Technical Career Field (TCF) is a national workforce development program within Veterans Health Administration (VHA) that was designed to replenish technical staff in critically identified positions. The TCF career fields represent those technical fields where VA-specific knowledge and experience is desirable for success in the field. Individuals selected follow a formal training plan for one or two years during which they are trained, coached, and supervised by a preceptor. Preceptors are selected annually, through an extensive application process, for their technical expertise, their commitment to training and the suitability of their facility as a training location. *Selectees will be required to sign Mobility, Training, and Continued Service Agreements.
This is a developmental position leading to a GS-11, performing assignments intended to broaden skills and provide practical experience leading to progressively more complex assignments performed under progressively less supervision. The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Asbestos control and abatement, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, hearing conservation, hazard communication.
- Hazardous and infectious waste management, water testing and treatment, respirator program, and anti-neoplastic drugs.
- Assess work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers.
- Conducting studies of work operations and processes.
- Regularly inspect medical center to identify potential occupational hazards and the need for further investigative studies and surveys.
- Determine compliance with various established criteria.
- Evaluating exposures and advising on control measures.
- Select or devise methods and instruments to perform studies/surveys, conduct measurements, and study and test materials associated with the work operation or work environment.
- Perform analysis to determine nature and degree of toxic materials present.
- Interpret results of studies for the work environment in terms of possible impairment to health, nature of health impairment, potential for medical center damages, etc.
- Present specific conclusions and recommendations to appropriate management and health officials.
- Receives and disposes of hazardous wastes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm
Telework: Yes - This position is authorized for telework but has not been authorized as virtual or remote (i.e., the must be able to work at the location the position is being announced for). VA supports the use of telework to help attract and retain talented individuals in public service, increase worker productivity, and better prepare the agency to operate during emergencies.
