Data Analyst

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center- Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (ERDC-CERL) is seeking a recent graduate OR a graduate student data analyst to assist in building process-based ecosystem models for DoD lands. Successful candidate will assist in development of modeling frameworks using code from existing open-source models, collaborations with model experts from a variety of universities, agencies, and entities across the country, and create new models through analysis and incorporation of new data sets and sources. 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop input files for process-based models
  • Open, collaborative code development using Git, including code review and troubleshooting 
  • Debugging code from a variety of languages
  • Converting Fortran, C, C++ to work with modern programming languages
  • Incorporation of error handling to facilitate automation of data handling
  • Refine and implement process-based and statistical models of carbon change across diverse ecosystems and land uses at various levels of accuracy and precision
  • Acquire and process geospatial data from a variety of sources
  • Experience with creating or following an efficient workflow for wrangling of large datasets 
  • Refine and verify assessment methods of model outputs, and evaluate changes under varying environments and conditions
  • Conducting research independently as well as in a team setting (collaborative skills)
  • Preparation of technical proposals and reports and peer-reviewed scientific journal articles
  • U. S. Citizenship is required for this position
  • Acquire, process, and analyze large, diverse geospatial and field collected data sets using various tools such as GIS, R, and/or Python to develop data analysis and integration strategies 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • B.S. required, M.S. preferred in Computer Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, or a related discipline 
  • Interest and ability to learn new programming languages
  • Experience coding and debugging
  • Experience with process-based modeling
  • Experience with Python, R, Bash, Linux, Open Source, Git, and/or related computer science skills
  • Experience with geospatial analysis of open-source geospatial libraries
  • Experience with fundamental engineering principles and equations
  • Experience with data collection and analyses using DevOps principles
  • Experience in environmental principles relating to soil and plant sciences
  • Experience developing applications independently, as well as in a team
  • Ability to work in a team setting with a variety of backgrounds, including engineers, scientists and other professionals with diverse expertise and backgrounds
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail

This is a 1-year full time position.  On-site is preferred.
