Lower School Dance and Movement Teacher

The Lower School Dance and Movement Teacher is a part-time, 50% position. We seek an individual who values the balance of an intellectually challenging and creative program with developmentally appropriate and research-based practices. Our excellent student-teacher ratios allow for personalized instruction and education of the whole child. We are looking for a highly motivated and creative person who works well as part of a team and independently. The ideal candidate must demonstrate knowledge of best practices for teaching elementary dance and movement.

Role:

  • Responsible for constructing, implementing, and sustaining classroom curriculum that allow students to engage in and appreciate dance, movement, health, and wellness using a variety of best-curricular approaches
  • Provide instruction in various styles of dance.
  • Prepare and coordinate dance concerts for students.
  • Integrate dance styles from different cultures and historical perspectives.
  • Collaborate with teachers and other specialists in developing student programs that promote commonalities, distinctions, and connections in and among dance, fine arts, and other subjects.
  • Oversee the social and emotional development of the students.
  • Utilize knowledge of a variety of instructional and assessment methods, integrated use of technology, and excellent communication skills to deliver learning program.
  • Collaborate with other teachers in implementing a multicultural and culturally relevant curriculum, in accordance with Roeper’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
  • Responsible for coordination and collaboration of sharing student learning and progress with parents/guardians through classroom communication including personalized communication, newsletters, conferences, and progress reports.
  • Maintain effective communication with other teachers, colleagues, and administration.
  • Demonstrate consistent engagement in strong, respectful, and gracious interpersonal and professional communication. 
  • Model positive behaviors for students and colleagues that align with the school’s core values, emphasizing social and emotional skills. 
  • Collaborate with Lower School faculty on school-wide initiatives and support of education through varied activities including faculty meeting attendance, department meeting attendance, committee participation and providing supervision for lunch, recess, after school duty and other school obligations. 
  • Provide support to other teachers and the Lower School to meet overall mission of The Roeper School. 

Skills:

  • Teaching experience providing classroom instruction in an elementary school 
  • Committed to supporting and collaborating with teachers to contribute and reach learning and classroom objectives 
  • Demonstrated instructional and communication skills 
  • Knowledge/experience working with gifted learners 
  • Ability to form collaborative work relationships to facilitate project completion 
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural competency work in order to perform responsibilities perform responsibilities in accordance with Roeper's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.   
  • A collegial approach and congenial temperament in line with Roeper School’s “collaborative culture” characterized by diversity and teamwork. 

Preparation

Bachelor’s degree in Dance and Movement, or related field and three to five years experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary Consideration: 

  • Salaries for the position are based on education and years of classroom teaching experience. Starting salaries for full-time faculty, with a Bachelor's degree from 41K or with a Master’s degree from 45K. The Dance Teacher position is part-time, 50%.
