Summary Description
Under the general direction of the GIS Coordinator, performs work relating to the implementation of the latest GIS practices and data maintenance of the City of Urbandale’s Geographic Information Systems. Assists in the development, coordination and training of city staff related to various components of the GIS: maps, data sets, applications, information files, etc.

Routine Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Participate in the implementation of the latest GIS practices and data maintenance of the City’s geographic information system (GIS) and asset/work management system (Cartegraph).
- Maintains and continually updates E911 address points and street centerline address ranges.
- Data collection using Global Position System.
- Performs quality control on GIS data including researching, interpreting, and validating sources of information in order to identify and correct errors or omissions in data and to keep data in compliance with City and Regional GIS data standards
- Gathers and provides information to contractors, developers, consultants, property owners, city employees/departments, and the public, including as-built drawings, aerial photographs, easements, right-of-way information, and utility locations and responds to inquiries concerning same.
- Imports, exports, and converts data from various formats and sources for use in GIS and related systems such as AutoCAD or MicroStation
- Coordinate, create, modify and maintain various city maps, applications, and other graphic information.
- Catalogs and files plat books, maps, deed and easement reference books from work orders and field inspection notes. Maintains databases of electronic scanned files, maps, and aerial photographs.
- Creates special maps requested by departments.
- Assist in coordinating data sharing, report and map generation of GIS services among City departments.
- Coordinates, trains, and instructs staff in operation of GIS system and asset work management system.
- Create workflows for city departments to complete tasks more efficiently and make more informed decisions.
- Integrate GIS with other computer applications.
- Partners with other governmental agencies, regional GIS participants, and citizen groups to deliver beneficial mapping and data services to the public.
- Research and investigate geographic information system industry techniques and products; evaluate and recommend GIS software and hardware systems.
- Set up cartography and database standards with use of best practices for efficiently maintaining data while maximizing performance.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Must be able to pass a pre-employment offer: reference checks, drug screen, motor vehicle report and background check. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
- 1 year of experience using Geographic Information System required.
- High School diploma or equivalent required. AA Degree in Geographical Information Systems, Geography, or a related field preferred.
- Valid Drivers' License required.

The salary range listed includes pay steps based on length of service therefore employees are offered a starting salary closer to the minimum of the advertised range.
