Examples of Duties: 

  • Regulates the development of new subdivisions and commercial sites in Unincorporated Chatham County, including reviewing and approving construction plans and supporting calculations to ensure compliance with local and State codes and ordinances and established engineering standards.
  • Reviews subdivision plats, Environmental Site Assessments (ESA), and ESA waiver requests to verify project compliance with County codes, ordinances, and requirements, including approving or denying ESA waiver requests, and recommending plats for approval by the County Engineer.
  • Researches and drafts new policies and ordinances and amendments to existing local engineering ordinances and codes for approval by the County Commission.
  • Provides information and advice and makes recommendations to the County Manager, County Commissioners, and department heads regarding construction projects.
  • Prepares information regarding County Commission agenda items for approval.
  • Inspects ongoing and completed developments to ensure compliance with approved plans and issues violation notices and stop work orders to non-compliant sites.
  • Notifies property owners of property impacts and construction schedules of projects.
  • Addresses, processes, investigates, and coordinates efforts to respond to citizen questions, complaints, and concerns about projects, including providing citizens with information.
  • Coordinates and reviews the work of contracted architects, engineers, county staff, and other project service providers.
  • Works with contractors to make design modifications necessary to conform with regulatory and project requirements and approves the designs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a closely related field; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must have passed or be able to pass the Fundamental of Engineering (FE) Exam within the first year of employment.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain the Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification within a specified time frame.
