City Judge
he City Judge presides over the City’s municipal court and oversees, manages, and administers the overall operation of the Judicial Department in accordance with the City Charter. In addition, the City Judge may serve as a hearing officer in various administrative proceedings. The City Judge is appointed by the City Council and serves at the pleasure of the City Council pursuant to an employment agreement with the City.
Essential Functions:
Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
Presides over proceedings in municipal court, which, except as otherwise provided by ordinance, shall have jurisdiction in and over all cases for the violation of any and all cases arising under the laws, ordinances, and resolutions of the City.
Has jurisdiction and power to issue search warrants, both in cases of violation of state laws and also in cases of violation of ordinances, rules, regulations or laws of the City, in the same manner and to the same extent as justices of the peace are authorized to issue such warrants under the general laws of the state.
Serves as a hearing officer in various administrative proceedings involving the City as permitted by state law and authorized by ordinance, including, but not limited to, proceedings on behalf of the City’s Beer Board and proceedings related to building and property maintenance code violations conducted in accordance with T.C.A. §§ 6-54-1001 et seq. The hearing officer’s role over administrative proceedings is subject to four-year reappointment terms by the City Council.
Oversees the operations of the Judicial Department including development of department policies and procedures, budgeting, purchasing, recordkeeping, and reporting; responsible for ensuring that all fines and costs assessed are collected and paid into the City treasury.
Supervises all employees within the Judicial Department; attends and participates in City leadership and staff meetings at the request of the City Manager
Additional Duties:
Performs other work as assigned by City Council pursuant to ordinance and employment agreement.
Physical Demands:
Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing sometimes involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires a Juris Doctorate.
Requires a minimum of six years of experience as a licensed attorney practicing in Tennessee.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Tennessee.
Residency requirement
Must be a resident of and qualified to vote in the City of Murfreesboro
