Founded in the spring of 2014 by immigrant leaders, the Intercultural Community Center (ICC) supports and improves the lives of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers by providing educational, health, social opportunities and resources. ICC empowers immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in the greater Portland area to achieve personal, social, and economic stability with the skills and tools needed to access essential community resources and make Maine their home. 

ICC focuses on two programs: our youth program and adult program. Our youth program includes an afterschool program and summer program that serves 5th-8th grade students, with a focus on academic support and empowerment for immigrant and multilingual students. Through project-based learning and expanded learning opportunities with diverse guest speakers and field trips, we support the various learning abilities and behavioral needs of our students. The intention behind our programming is to offer opportunities and support for students to improve English language skills, solidify academic gains and develop positive social skills in a fun, low-pressure learning environment.

  • Inspire and Guide: Serve as a role model and mentor, using SEL techniques to prioritize youth engagement and foster meaningful connections.
  • Empower Dreams: Help young people set ambitious goals and create actionable plans to achieve them, all while nurturing relationships with their peers and supportive adults.
  • Build Community: Collaborate with community members and partners to establish robust support networks that uplift and empower youth.
  • Create Impactful Programs: Design and implement programming that addresses both academic needs and personal development, ensuring a holistic approach to youth support.
