Elementary Principal

Job Summary: The Elementary Principal serves as the educational leader of the school. This role includes overseeing instructional programs, managing staff and students, handling financial matters, and engaging with the community. The principal is dedicated to creating a safe, orderly, and nurturing environment that promotes academic, social, and emotional growth for all students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Instructional Leadership:

  • Develop and implement a shared vision and mission for the school that promotes high standards of academic achievement.
  • Lead the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs and services that meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Promote the use of effective teaching practices and data-driven decision-making to improve student outcomes.
  • Support professional development opportunities for staff to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Monitor student progress and ensure the use of appropriate assessment tools to measure student performance.
  • Implement strategies to close achievement gaps and support the needs of all learners, including those with special needs and English language learners.
  • Foster a positive school climate that promotes student engagement, motivation, and responsibility.

Community and Family Engagement:

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the school and the community, building strong relationships with families, community members, and local organizations.
  • Communicate effectively with all stakeholders to share information about school programs, events, and student progress.
  • Encourage family and community involvement in school activities and decision-making processes.

Staff Supervision and Development:

  • Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate school staff, including teachers, support staff, and administrative personnel.
  • Support staff in implementing effective teaching practices and classroom management.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that promotes professional growth.

School Management and Operations:

  • Develop and manage the school budget, ensuring the efficient use of resources to support instructional and operational needs.
  • Oversee the maintenance and safety of the school facility, ensuring a secure and healthy learning environment.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies, state regulations, and federal laws.

School Culture and Climate:

  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and respectful school culture that values diversity and fosters a sense of belonging for all students and staff.
  • Address disciplinary issues promptly and fairly, implementing restorative practices where appropriate.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance student well-being, including programs that support social-emotional learning and mental health.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must know of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Employee Handbook.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in education.
  • Master’s degree with emphasis in Educational Leadership.
  • Elementary teaching certificate.
  • Administrator certificate or the ability to obtain within 3 years.
  • 3 years teaching experience, 5 years preferred.
  • Requires the ability to build a collaborative professional learning community.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong data skills, including analysis, use, and reporting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
