The position is responsible for providing professional engineering and scientific work where the incumbent has knowledge and skills in two or more professional engineering series for which no one discipline is paramount or when a discipline is not covered by an established series. Works in a combination of two or more areas to include the professional engineering fields of aerospace, computer, material, mechanical, safety.

Individual serves as an engineer supporting systems integration activities and operations in day-to-day coordination with external engineering offices. Engages in projects with teams involved in the design, development, test, evaluation or experimentation of various types of advanced technology, processes and systems. Conducts engineering analysis, experimentation of equipment, or evaluation and development of equipment, instrumentation, materials and processes. May also be involved in performing experimental and investigative activities aimed at developing new and improved equipment in order to advance the current state of technology. Establishes and maintains liaisons to ensure that concerns such as system verification approaches, reliability analysis, risk analysis, and operations analysis are adequate to fulfill program goals and objectives. The engineer may make minor innovations and modifications of procedures and techniques.

Assignments typically consist of a series of interrelated tasks for problems which have been isolated or defined. The work involves the application of standard engineering practices to situations or relate new problems/work situations to precedent cases/practices. The work requires coordination with related engineering fields for references. May apply a series of steps and procedures relating primarily to the fact finding and investigative phases of the work.  Typically, teams with higher graded engineers/scientists to perform supplemental and subsidiary investigations necessary for project completion and contribution to final products/projects.  

Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsible for carrying out assigned duties in a manner consistent with the safety policies defined by the supervisor.  Reports safety hazards, potentially hazardous situations, and close calls to the supervisor.  Assists the supervisor to identify and eliminate un-safe conditions.

-Knowledge of the art and science of two or more specialty areas of an engineering and/or architectural discipline sufficient to formulate, evaluate, nurture, and promote the generation and exchange theories, concepts, principles, methods, applications, and practices

- Plan, evaluate, and execute short- and long-range programs; serve as an expert on broad programs, highly specialized fields, or industries that affect DOD interests;  and  extend the existing parameters of engineering or architecture knowledge and its application and practice.

- Knowledge of DOD and DON budgetary and financial management systems, and Federal procurement practices.

- Knowledge and skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing, including the preparation and proficient presentation of briefings and talks to high-ranking military (through Flag Officer) and civilian (through Senior Executive Service) managers.
