Cost Estimator- Structural Steel

Job Description: Estimator

Job Summary

Responsible for the accurate preparation of various types of cost estimates using bid documents, specifications and design drawings. Estimates include costs for all labor, materials, freight and buyout items required by the customer. 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Review bidding documents and design drawings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.
  • Prepare lump sum, unit price and budgetary estimates by compiling all costs associated the required scope of work.
  • Quantify all labor requirements for each estimate.
  • Prepare material lists and solicit pricing from qualified vendors according to project schedule requirements.
  • Communicate with other departments to identify potential risks or cost saving measures.
  • Determines inexplicit areas to qualify bids.
  • Review pricing from vendors/subcontractors to ensure accuracy with the assigned scope of work.
  • Assist the sales team in the preparation of the various items that are to be included with the proposal.
  • Establish fabrication and delivery schedules according to project requirements.
  • Maintain files of working documents as back-up for the estimate, including current information on prices from vendors and subcontractors.
  • Prepares documents and information for the project management team on sold projects.
  • Assists Project Management and/or Sales staff with pricing issues on existing contracts.
  • Evaluate and document cost history on awarded projects.
  • Perform additional assignments as directed.

  • Some occasional travel may be required

Knowledge and Skills

Experience, Education and Training:

Bachelor’s degree in construction management or engineering preferred, but not required. Structural steel detailing or vocational training or other secondary education program is preferred, but not required. Minimum 4 years combination of training and experience in working with structural steel drawings is required. 

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

Exceptional mathematical, analytical and problem solving skills.  Must have experience with Microsoft software applications with a strong emphasis placed on Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Word.  Working use of Fabtrol and StruMIS estimating softwareis required.  Good verbal and written communication skills.  Capability to identify cost-saving methods to increase profitability. Ability to read and interpret technical and legal documents as well as construction and shop drawings.
