Wildlife Management and Restoration Technician

One Wildlife Management and Restoration Technician (Seasonal Worker, 40 hours/week, up to 12-month) position is available with the Colorado State University (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position will provide support to the natural resources program at Bellows Air Force Station (AFS), Hawaii. Hiring preference will be given to candidates already residing in the state.

 

The Wildlife Management and Restoration Technician will be tasked with a variety of monitoring and environmental restoration projects across the diverse coastal and wetland habitats at Bellows AFS.

 

Priority tasks would include:

  • Surveys:
    • Inoa’ole Stream & Pu’ewai Wetland
    • Monitor wedge-tailed shearwater burrows within costal habitats
  • Nursery:
    • Nursery inventory
    • Identify needed supplies for Conservation Program
    • Repair Irrigation System and Identify needed parts
    • Measure Storage Container/Concrete pad
  • Service Projects/Educational Outreach:
    • Plan April events for Earth Day/Arbor Day
    • Draft informational summary and submit with photograph to marketing
  • Control/Removal of Invasive Species:
    • Rake/crab net Water Hyacinth & Water Lettice from Inoa’ole Stream
    • Eradicate wedelia from dunes in front pavilion C
  • General Management:
    • Cut path along Inoa’ole Stream for bird surveys
  • Miscellaneous:
    • Maintain/monitor DV out-planting flora
    • Secure quotes DV out-planting pesticide & mulch SF
    • Polaris EV Batteries (Lead Acid vs AGM Sealed), Solinoid, Gas Pedal
    • Maintain animal cameras
    • Propose/Install/Survey ‘Ua’u Kani (Wedge-tailed Shearwater) Signs, Posts, Cement, Camera
  • Potential other tasks MAY include:
  • Wildlife surveys/data collection as needed
  • Inventory ironwood trees, an invasive tree species on O’ahu, at various locations on the installation. include dune and wetlands restoration projects, feral hog removal events, and organizing and leading bimonthly outreach/service projects (e.g., small-scale plantings, invasive plant roundups, and beach clean-ups)
  • Maintaining, organizing, and inventorying the plant nursery and propagating native plants
  • Mapping responsibilities will include documenting the restoration status of coastal dunes with the use of a Trimble GPS unit, using a GIS application (ArcGIS) to map the current condition of beach access points
  • Updating spatial data indicating locations of invasive trees around wetlands and streams
  • Measuring dune elevation using a Zip level pro high precision altimeter 
  • Additional general conservation activities may include:
    • Maintaining trails
    • Photo documentation of plants and habitats
    • Building concrete casting forms to support signposts. 

 

The technician will be required to use, maintain, and inventory a variety of hand tools, including shovels, pruners, hand saws, machetes, and occasionally weed-eaters and chain saws. All data collected in support of the wildlife monitoring and management and restoration activities will be entered into surveys/brochures.

 

Must be able to relocate for the position duration and provide vehicle to commute to the installation. ECDP is unable to provide relocation or housing costs at this time.
