Research Scientist I (JR-0000941)

Responsibilities

The Research Scientist I will participate in food and clinical testing utilizing conventional and molecular methods.  The incumbent will accession specimens and perform bacterial culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.  Molecular testing methods will include real-time PCR, Next generation sequencing (whole-genome and MinION), DNA sequencing, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.  Additionally, the incumbent will manage specimens, utilize a clinical information management system, provide results of testing and contribute to laboratory testing and data analysis for special studies.  The Research Scientist I will also contribute to assay development to understand the utility of conventional and molecular methods for the detection and understanding of bacterial infections.  In addition, the incumbent will contribute in a significant way to manuscript and SOP writing and provide presentations to the laboratory, the center, and at conferences as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of research experience; OR a Master’s degree in a related field and one year of research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

At least two years of experience in food microbiology, clinical microbiology, molecular biology or related field. Skills including food or clinical specimen handling and working with bacterial isolates.  Molecular work experience using real-time PCR, DNA sequencing, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.  Conventional experience with bacterial culture and antimicrobial resistance testing. Experience with assay design, development, and data management.

 

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Travel, 25-50% of the time, will be required. A valid driver's license in good standing will be required.

Exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position. Therefore, the incumbent in this position may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment including but not limited to a gloves, a lab coat and a face shield. 

This position may require occasional work on weekends, after-hours, and holidays. 

This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting will not be available.
