National Agricultural Genotyping Center Internship Program

 

 

Applicants are generally expected to be in the process of obtaining an associate’s degree (AA) or a baccalaureate degree (BS) in a natural science or closely related field.  Internships are offered during the summer, or as needed based upon available projects. 

 

 

Intern Duties/Responsibilities:

 

Duties may vary, depending on current project needs. Projects are usually related to technical method development, validation studies and instrument calibration or maintenance. Interns will not perform independent work on contract samples.

 

Major Duties may include, but are not limited toParticipates in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties, in a laboratory, or greenhouse related to the research design and development of multiplexed assays for rapid detection and characterization.

 

Essential responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepare lab solutions, analyze samples according to established protocol and in a timely manner, documenting all data and results;
  • Perform physical tests and analysis of products from lab or bulk trials;
  • Follow direction of test methodology requested (or as directed);
  • Evaluate results of data; formulate reports from data collected in accordance to standard test methods and processes and/or as specified by supervisor;
  • Maintain effective communication with all personnel (including but not limited to Laboratory Supervision and Operations personnel);
  • Keep all lab equipment and supplies clean and in good working order

 

 

Educational Requirements:

 

Those applying for an internship with the NAGC are expected to have completed at least one year at college or university prior to the start date of the internship. They must be pursuing or have completed an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, biology or closely related scientific field. Minimum GPA requirement is 3.0.

 

 

Skills, Training, or Qualifications:

 

Applicants must be familiar with basic scientific principles. Specific skill requirements will vary depending upon available projects. It would be advantageous to the applicant if they have been exposed to and have or are currently working in a molecular biology setting. It is also desired that the applicant have strong computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and WordPress.

 

 

 

Training and Supervision that will be provided by NAGC:

 

The program provides an opportunity for interns to gain hands-on experience and training by taking part in everyday activities within the laboratory. Interns will be introduced to a variety of analytical tasks and will be directly supervised and mentored by working Research Scientists. 

 

 

Time Commitment:

 

Internships will be offered, depending on need, and will minimally require 4 hours per week for 2 or more months, not to exceed 12 months. Schedules may vary, depending on specific tasks and intern availability. Typically, hours can be scheduled between 8am – 4pm, Monday through Friday.
