2024-2025 BBBSLI College Mentoring Program at Stony Brook University

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to realize their endless potential. BBBSLI makes meaningful, professionally supported matches between adult volunteers (‘Bigs’) and children (‘Littles’). Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Our Site-based College Mentoring Program provides mentors who help children build their self-confidence, improve their peer interactions and improve their academic abilities. The program is designed to match children with a college student who acts as a positive role model and can provide the opportunity for a child to see the benefits of pursuing a higher education. By sharing their academic achievements and commitment to higher education, it allows our students to see what is possible for their future.

The program takes place on campus and offers mentees a unique experience outside of the classroom. The supervised program meets every Tuesday during the Fall and Spring semesters from approximately 3:00 - 4:30 pm. Each visit contains individual one-to-one time shared between each Big and Little, followed by a group activity with all matches in the program.

In addition to helping a child see his or her true potential, volunteers in the program will be receiving approximately 30 hours of community service in the fall semester and will transition to an internship for credit to gain 1 credit to satisfy EXP+ requirements.

We are seeking volunteers who will be consistent in weekly attendance and will have the desire to continue their availability between the Fall and Spring semesters with a break for January.

Interviews will take place ASAP!
