Graduate Student Assistant-Student Support Services

COMPENSATION: $11,236/academic year ($5,618/semester) plus 8 credits of tuition/semester; 20 hours/week 

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY: The Student Support Services Graduate Student Assistant is responsible for assisting the Director with the functions and overall operation of SSS and the Academic Coordinators with some of the SSS components.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Meet with and assist students participating in SSS. 

2. Mentor, attend, and assist with activities related to programming and tutoring SSS students. 

3. Assist with the Peer Mentor Program. 

4. Read and evaluate reflective papers from SSS students during the Peer Mentor program.

5. Periodically verify record keeping of individuals by checking reports. 

6. Create and feed Excel sheet and report with student’s evaluation into databases. 

7. Assist with the SSS Mentor Orientations and Mentorships. 

8. Assist with SSS tutor/mentor interviews. 

9. Assist and attend staff meetings, events, and regularly scheduled meetings with the SSS staff. 

10. Assist with the SSS events and tutoring promotional campaign, encouraging every student to get involved in at least one activity and take advantage of tutoring as needed. 

11. Utilize and feed the internal system with students' information. 

12. Advise a student programming organization. 

13. Prepare reports, answer correspondence, and make presentations as deemed necessary by the Director, Program Assistant, or Academic Coordinator of the Student Support Services. 

14. Communicate regularly with the Director and staff of SSS. 

15. Be present in the SSS office and related activities for 20 hours a week 

16. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director, Program Assistant, and/or Academic Coordinator of SSS.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 1. Must be a graduate student. 

2. Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. 

3. Acceptance into graduate school or currently enrolled in graduate studies at Northern Michigan University. 

4. Experience giving presentations to a variety of groups. 

5. Experience as a member of at least one student organization as an undergraduate. 

6. Experience organizing major projects and events. 

7. Above average communication skills – writing, speaking, and listening. 

8. Strong organizational skills.
