On-Call Field Techs and Field Biologists, Sacramento Valley and Sierra Foothills

H. T. Harvey & Associates, an ecological consulting firm with four offices in Northern California and one in Hawaii, is looking for on-call field tech and field biologists to assist with projects in the Sacramento Valley, Central Valley, Sierra Nevada, and Cascade Mountain regions in the late spring and summer months (May―September). Candidates may be based in proximity to these areas. The anticipated pay range for this position is $22.50 per hour to $45.50 per hour. Actual compensation within the range will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Our projects are in the Sacramento Valley as well as in the broader Bay Area, Central Valley, Sierra Nevada, and Cascade Mountain regions. The Sacramento office team has particular experience in projects focused on ecological restoration and on the long-term stewardship and monitoring of watersheds, rare and endangered species, habitat preserves, and similar conserved lands, often within the context of working agricultural lands or other multi-use landscapes. 

The successful on-call team members will work with experienced senior ecologists as part of a collaborative project team to support environmental compliance for a variety of projects. Work may include conducting field studies, including for wildlife, invertebrate, and botanical species found in Northern California, such as: Swainson’s hawk, American goshawk, Foothill yellow-legged frog, California red-legged frog, Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog, vernal pool branchiopods, insects such as the Valley elderberry longhorn beetle or native bumble bees, and California native flora. Work may also include monitoring, data collection, and contributing to client reports. 

Desired competencies, skills, and experience 

  • At least one season of prior field work (can be volunteer or for a paid position)
  • Knowledge about the biological resources of California
  • Attention to detail
  • A collaborative approach to work and communication
  • Prior experience and willingness to conduct fieldwork in remote areas
  • For field ecologist role, a bachelor’s or master’s degree or degree in progress in biological studies, natural resources, wildlife management, plant ecology, wildlife biology, or an equivalent subject

This position requires the future employee to:

  • Conduct field work and follow best practices for field safety
  • Travel within California for fieldwork
  • Hold a valid driver’s license with no major traffic violations or multiple minor violations
  • Walk over varied terrain for surveys and work in inclement weather
