Visual Media and Policy Communications Intern

The Salt Lake City Council Office seeks a driven and creative intern to join the Communications Team. As an intern, you will create engaging visual content using videos and photos to explain complex policy ideas. This hands-on experience will be crucial for informing and involving Salt Lake City residents about the Council's policy decisions and projects in impactful ways.

Position Overview:
Under the direction of the communication team, you will play a role in integrating visual storytelling techniques with government policy. Your primary responsibility will be to create compelling and impactful visual content such as videos and digital media that effectively articulate the Council's policy objectives. 

 

This position requires creativity, visual media skills, and policy understanding. Ideal for those passionate about using visuals to create narratives to shape public policy and perceptions.

The ideal candidate possesses excellent communication skills, is highly organized, and can work effectively, independently and as part of a team. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and be able to adapt quickly to changing priorities.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize, shoot, and edit high-quality visuals for distribution on digital platforms, including social media and websites. 
  • Edit and publish images and videos following a consistent workflow.
  • Attend various Council events to capture content. 
    Note- Events often occur outside regular business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. We are open to flexibility regarding what items are covered. 
  • Support the communications team in daily tasks and assist in executing broader communications strategies.
     

Minimum qualifications:  

  • Team player with effective communication and collaboration skills.
  •  Self-starter who can work with little supervision.  
  •  Skilled in creating visual content for various digital platforms. 
  •  Strong technical skills in photography, photojournalism, and video production. 
  •  A creative eye and a good sense of aesthetics.
  •  Strong written communication skills.
  •  Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and project management abilities. 
  •  Must be able to adhere to tight deadlines while juggling multiple tasks and projects.
  •  Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or similar editing software. 
  •  Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, etc.). 
  •  Familiarity with the latest trends in digital media. 

 

Preferred skills: 

  • Basic understanding of local government structure and policy topics.
  • Experience with Asana or similar project management software.
  • Understanding of visual journalism/reporting ethics.

 

Internship details: 

  • Part-time, paid internship requiring a commitment of 20 hours per week.  
  • Hybrid work schedule with two or more days in the office for team collaboration and the remainder remote/work from home.
  • Flexible work hours around your school schedule. 
  • Three months, with the potential for an extension and a flexible start date.
