Assistant Research Scientist (JR-0000930)

Responsibilities

The Assistant Research Scientist will assist with performing public health DNA sequencing in the Advanced Genomic Technologies Cluster (AGTC), including next-generation sequencing (NGS) of SARS-CoV-2. The incumbent will assist with the entire sequencing process from sample accessioning to review of the results. In addition, the incumbent will learn new methods and automated technologies as they are developed to continually improve sequencing services. The incumbent will perform other appropriate related duties.

This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center’s mission in the New York State Department of Health’s efforts to protect and promote the health of New York’s citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and one year of research experience; OR a master’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with next generation sequencing and liquid handling robots. Experience working in a clinical laboratory and familiarity with quality control measures.

 

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting will not be available.

Travel, up to 10%, will be required.

Exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position. Therefore, the incumbent in this position may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment including but not limited to a lab coat, gloves and eye goggles.

This position may require occasional work on weekends, after-hours, and holidays.
