About Turtle Up
Mission:
Turtle Up aims to sustainably preserve and conserve Ghana’s sea turtles by utilizing a community-based approach. Our vision is to contribute to a future where marine wildlife and people in coastal communities are thriving together.
Background:
Solidarity reminds us that our resource consumption has impacts around the globe. Sea turtles are the oldest creatures on the planet, and they have been helping the environment for over 130 million years by:
- Maintaining the ecological balance in the ocean.
- Supporting the growth and propagation of seagrasses.
- Nourishing beaches with nutrients by laying their eggs.
- Promoting fish stocks by feeding in jellyfish.
- Promoting healthy coral reef ecosystems.
Sea Turtles face numerous threats such as plastic pollution, global warming, poachers, land erosion, and shore development. All seven species of sea turtles are threatened by extinction globally and conserving and preserving sea turtles plays a major role in creating a healthy environment on land and in the ocean.
