Director of Curriculum and Instruction

DEFINITION:   This position functions to provide leadership of instructional design in the aligned content areas of Mathematics, English Language Arts, English Learner Program Science, Social Studies, Fine Arts, World Languages, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Health and Physical Education, including the development, revision, and alignment of PK-12 curriculum; development, acquisition, and/or dissemination of instructional materials and supports; development and implementation of professional learning programs; and coordination of Educational Services related events and activities for students, teachers, administrators, parents and community members. This position will function as an instructional leader, while implementing programs and practices that support the Mineral County School District Board of Trustees’ identified strategic imperatives for student achievement (academic achievement, engagement, school support, and clarity and focus) as well as the District’s Focus Areas and Goals (proficiency, academic growth, achievement gaps, college and career readiness, value/return on investment, disproportionality, and family/community engagement and customer service). Ensure district-wide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Education programs and curriculum development activities comply with established laws, rules, and regulations and grant specifications. This person reports to the Superintendent and participates as a member of the Administrative Team & Superintendent’s Cabinet.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to the essential functions). 

  • The list of Essential Duties and Responsibilities is not exhaustive and me be supplemented.
  • Responsible for supporting the Grants Manager with the development and implementation of federal or state aid programs including but not limited to Title I, Title II, Title III and Title IV.
  • Collaborates and coordinates with other district departments toward alignment of standards, curriculum, instruction, assessment, grading and reporting practices.
  • Collaborates and coordinates with other district departments in the coordination and implementation of professional learning opportunities for staff and administrators;
  • Conducts policy analysis, development and proposes revisions related to curriculum and professional learning to enhance student services and student support activities.
  • Implements strategic plan goals, objectives, and initiatives, and monitors and reports progress to the Superintendent, Board of Trustees and other stakeholders as required;
  • Collaborates with other district departments in addressing common curricular issues and

initiatives; establishing ongoing priorities, goals and strategies for development of curriculum and the development and acquisition of instructional assessment standards.

  • Works with the Admin team to oversee approval of new courses and maintenance; oversees alternate means of credit; oversees Master Course File approvals; oversees Course of Study development and practice.
  • Facilitates the design and implementation of a five (5) year plan for the implementation of curriculum and high quality, standard based instruction, as well as professional learning that supports the curriculum, instruction and assessment in all content areas.
  • Requests appropriate technology /programming and support for increased student achievement.
  • Facilitates and serves, in partnership with other District departments, as the District’s designated leader for the support and successful implementation of professional learning communities in development of curricular and instructional programs.
  • Collaborates with leadership to ensure all stakeholders are included in the design, development and delivery of support systems.
  • Interacts regularly and professionally with District administration, schools, parents/guardians and community-based agencies.
  • Works collaboratively with other District departments and schools to ensure relevant student achievement data is driving the goals and outcomes of professional learning community work;
  • Monitors text material selection and inventory within budget guidelines; Monitors supplemental text selection through established District procedures.

·        Ensures compliance with and communicates/implements applicable legislative mandates, codes, regulations policies, procedures and laws;

·        Oversees and encourage parent/guardian and community involvement in District level curriculum, instruction and support services.

Knowledge of

  • Effective leadership practices; organizational and management strategies as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs; policies, and fiscal management relating to operational needs; methods, materials and techniques employed in the administration of a staff development program; research methods and sources of information related to education; current principles and practices of supervision and evaluations. Current knowledge of the latest research, trends and developments in all areas of education, specifically programs related to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development;
  • Nevada and MCSD School Performance Frameworks, School Performance Plans, and Professional Growth Systems for administrators and teachers;
  • Nevada Academic Content Standards (ELA and Mathematics based on Common Core State Standards) and associated shifts in pedagogical practice, next generation assessment instruments, project based learning, 21st century learning skills and strategies, technology integration, assessment literacy, and student engagement strategies;

  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing; conducting research, analyzing findings, developing sound conclusions, and preparing comprehensive reports and plans; working independently and handling multiple priorities; meeting deadlines, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with school officials, colleagues, administrators, teachers, parents, the general public, and the educational community at large;

·        Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form with the ability to make clear persuasive presentations to diverse groups.

·        Demonstrate the ability to provide leadership, motivate staff, group dynamics, and research exemplary programs.

·        Market programs, knowing curricular areas encompassed within program.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Required

Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction

Nevada Administrative licensure endorsement

5 years’ experience in teaching and/or administration

 

Preferred

Bilingual

Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to use keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods. Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit, and stand for long periods of time. Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper; occasional lifting of files, stacks of paper or reports, references, and other materials. Some reaching for items above and below desk level. Some reaching, bending, squatting, and stooping to access files and records is necessary. The manual dexterity and cognitive ability to operate a personal computer using word processing and databases. Involves hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Light lifting (up to 25 pounds) is occasionally required.

Work is performed under the following conditions.

Exposure to climate controlled classroom settings to outside weather with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. May involve exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud and occasional to frequent time periods. May involve work in crowded environments. 

Hazards: Classroom furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).

Blood-Borne Pathogens: An encounter with blood or other bodily fluids may occur in this line of work. You will be expected to know and follow the safety steps in the safety training provided annually.
