NIAR Walter H. Beech Wind Tunnel Student Assistant

The NIAR Walter H. Beech Wind Tunnel is looking for an Undergraduate Student Assistant. Freshmen through Seniors (even with no previous research experience) are encouraged to apply! The successful candidate will help with everyday activities including the operation of the wind tunnel laboratory and solving real-world aerodynamic and experimental engineering challenges with outside commercial customers and other researchers. This is a very ‘hands on’ position.

This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Person”. Information will need to be collected in this regard, but will only be used to ensure compliance with U.S. export control laws. The primary RESPONSIBILITIES for this position include:

  • Setup and conduct wind tunnel testing including operation and control of the Beech Wind Tunnel.
  • Assist with wind tunnel model installation and configuration changes during wind tunnel testing.
  • Assist with wind tunnel maintenance and calibrations.

The REQUIREMENTS for this position are:

  • Currently pursuing an Aerospace Engineering degree at WSU
  • Strong interest in aerodynamics and/or wind tunnels
  • Ability to personally and professionally interact with other students, staff, faculty, and outside customers of the Walter H. Beech Wind Tunnel

The PREFERRED skills for this position are:

  • ‘Hands-on’ mechanical skills (use of hand tools, power tools, etc.).
  • Keen ability to ‘think on your feet’ yet listen to and implement direction.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

 

This is a paid position for 12 – 30 hours/week during the semesters. Full time opportunities during the Summers. We’re looking for students to work here for their entire academic career.
