Description and Functions

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking to hire a Nongame Mammologist to help implement Wyoming’s State Wildlife Action Plan in either Casper or Lander.  This would include coordinating and implementing Wyoming’s Preble’s Meadow Jumping Mouse recovery and monitoring/management of other nongame mammal species (excluding bats and forest carnivore species).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

 

  • Coordinates nongame mammal management by developing and implementing internal and external projects that address needs identified in Wyoming's State Wildlife Action Plan and benefit nongame Species of Greatest Conservation Need.
  • Represent the Department on a wide variety of interagency recovery, conservation, and working groups.
  • Develops and disseminates technical and non-technical information regarding assigned nongame mammals to the public, agencies, and NGOs.
  • Maintains and updates nongame databases to ensure contiguous and seamless data.
  • Coordinates the management, conservation, inventory, and monitoring of Threatened, Endangered, and Species of Greatest Conservation needs across multi-jurisdictional boundaries.
  • Establishes management goals and objectives, conducts field surveys, and analyzes data; collaborates with Department personnel to plan habitat proposals to ensure consideration of game and nongame needs.
  • Makes recommendations to guide policies or procedures by diagnosing and addressing complex programs that require technical knowledge.
  • Reviews all biologic data on assigned nongame mammal species collected within the work unit and fulfills annual reporting requirements.
  • Provides comments on Wildlife Environmental Reviews to the Department's Habitat Protection Program and assists Regional Wildlife Biologists with their review process.
  • Hires and directs work of temporary employees to conduct nongame mammal monitoring.



 

 

Qualifications

 


PREFERENCES: 


Preference may be given to candidates who have a Bachelor's Degree in wildlife management or closely related fields.
Preference will also be given to candidates who have a graduate degree with an emphasis in nongame mammals, as well as work experience related to nongame mammals. Preference will be given to candidates willing to work out of the Lander or Casper regions.


KNOWLEDGE: 

 

  • Knowledge of game and non-game mammalian wildlife management, data collection techniques, and conservation issues.
  • Knowledge of how to conduct a methodical examination.
  • Knowledge of how to find, gather, and collect information or data.
  • Knowledge of management, protection, propagation, and conservation of fish, wildlife, and habitat.
  • Knowledge of research methods, techniques, and/or sources of information.
  • Knowledge of agency, professional, and/or industry standards and practices.
  • Knowledge of native Wyoming plants and introduced plants for habitat work.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Wildlife Management)

Experience:

1-2 years progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Wildlife Biologist II

OR

 

Education & Experience Substitution:

4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Wildlife Biologist II

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


 

  • Able to work in various weather conditions and environments
  • Able to work all days of the week and varied work hours, including weekends, holidays, early mornings, nights based on nongame mammal monitoring needs.
  • Able to work in remote locations
  • Able to be on call to respond to job requirements
  • Able to travel
