Staff Accountant

NATIONAL WIC ASSOCIATION (DC, MARYLAND, VIRGINIA AREA (WITHIN 2 HOURS OF THE NWA OFFICE) )

The National WIC Association (NWA), the nonprofit education arm and advocacy voice of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), has an immediate opening for a Staff Accountant.

The Association is a high-impact non-profit, member organization that represents more than 2,000 service provider agencies that offer quality nutrition education, breastfeeding support, health care and other social referral services to at-risk women and young children in over 10,000 WIC clinics nationwide.

The Staff Accountant is responsible for assisting with the preparation of financial statements, maintaining financial records, and ensuring that all financial transactions are accurately recorded. This role involves a variety of accounting tasks including account reconciliation, financial reporting, and assisting with audits. The Staff Accountant works closely with the Director of Finance & Administration to support overall financial operations and compliance.

The Staff Accountant is responsible for:

  1. General Ledger Maintenance:
    • Prepare and record journal entries.
    • Maintain and reconcile balance sheet and general ledger accounts.
    • Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations.
  2. Financial Reporting:
    • Assist in the preparation of financial statements in compliance with official guidelines and requirements.
    • Assist with the month-end and year-end closing processes.
  3. Accounts Payable and Receivable:
    • Process accounts payable and receivable transactions accurately and timely.
    • Monitor accounts to ensure timely payments.
    • Assist in resolving invoice discrepancies and issues.
    • Assist with processing annual 1099s.
  4. Audit and Compliance:
    • Assist with internal and external audits.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  5. Additional Responsibilities:
    • Provide reporting support as needed for department leads and/or management.
    • Identify and recommend improvements to financial procedures and processes.
    • Stay up to date with industry trends and regulatory changes.

 

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

 

  • 1-3 years of accounting experience, preferably in a similar role.
  • Experience with accounting software (Sage Intacct, Bill.com) is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • CPA or working towards CPA certification is a plus.

 

Salary Range:

$67,000 - $80,000

NWA full-time staff must be based in the DC metro area, which includes Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. We currently have a hybrid work environment with the expectation of 32 hours per month in the physical office at 1099 14th Street, NW Washington, DC.
