Student Volunteer Description/Overview: Students responding to this posting will be assigned to the IRS Office of the Chief Operating Officer Student Volunteer Program (SVP) Office and will perform work in one of several business- divisions.

Students generally support executive-level efforts related to strategic planning, organizational improvement, and/or stakeholder engagement. This may include:
- Supporting development and implementation of the Chief Operating Officer's strategic plan and/or industry engagement plan.
- Managing correspondence, assist with change management, data analysis, track reporting requirements, organizations planning, and/or stakeholder engagement
- Assessing workforce/workload optimization and initiatives, analyzing process improvements, researching emerging technologies, tracking/reporting requirements and metrics for government-wide initiatives from the Office of Management and Budget or Congress.
- Researching best practices, attending meetings with executives, creating documents and updating/maintaining SharePoint sites for stakeholders' relations.
- Drafting white papers and/or business memos for senior leadership.
- Attending events, helping build stakeholder relations with industry representatives or media organizations.
- Supporting the IRS Commissioner's efforts related to the Strategic Operating Plan.
Exact assignments will depend on the student's area of study and skills or interests.
Outcomes for Students: The student will be able to explore career options, enhance their knowledge about the inner workings of a large federal agency, and develop their business analysis, strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, administrative, and/or communication/networking skills.
Desired Qualifications:
- Self-motivated and detail-oriented.
- Posses strong analytical skills.
- Have the ability to work both independently and on cross-functional teams.
- Proficient at Microsoft Office Suite.
- Written and verbal communication in assessing customer needs.
- Knowledge of and skill in applying data visualization tools (graphs, tables, charts, etc.,) and end-user business intelligence products.
- Knowledge with Power BI is nice.
Desired Skills:
- Writing and computer skills.
- Possess good decision-making and time management skills.
- Solid understanding of social media practices.
- General understanding of government and current events.
Desired Areas of Study: Accounting, Business Management, Project Management, Information Technology & Technical Studies, Cybersecurity, Information & Data Sciences, Deaf Studies, Government, Political Science, Community Development, Psychological Science, and Liberal Arts.
Students from other academic disciplines are still encouraged to apply.
Location: This program is based out of the IRS National Headquarters in Washington, DC. Students can apply from locations around the United States near other IRS locations. Telework/ Remote work is available with private Wi-Fi conditions.
Schedule & pay: This program requires 8 hours/week participation between 8:30AM-5:00PM EST. This is an unpaid volunteer position.
- Ideal candidates can commit to approximately 16 - 20 hours per week during the core hours listed above.
- Student volunteer schedule will be based on his or her class schedule.
- Academic credit can be approved.
- This is a non-paid position.
Application Requirements:
- Student must be a United States Citizen or National and be at least 16 years old.
- Be a current student, enrolled at least a half-time basis as defined by your educational institution.
- Be in good academic standing as defined by your educational institution with an accumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Student must maintain student eligibility and enrollment throughout the duration of the program and must be actively enrolled at an accredited institution.
- Graduated students may not work beyond his/her graduation date without proof of future enrollment in an accredited university.
If selected, the student applicant must successfully complete a federal background check before being given an official offer.
