Community Outreach Associate

Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes is a community-based free food pantry dedicated to providing nutritious food to the Watsonville and surrounding communities. Our Notre Dame AmeriCorps member supports our mission by helping directly distribute food to the pantry and lunch guests and recruit and manage wonderful community volunteers, Monday through Friday. It is a rewarding, collaborative, guest-centric environment.

Ready to become an essential service member to your community? We are seeking, full-time AmeriCorps members to serve in Watsonville August, 2024 - June 2025.

Notre Dame Mission Volunteers - AmeriCorps (ndmva.org) members serve in Watsonville and around the country, supporting the community by providing educational assistance in the school district as well as volunteer recruitment and support at local nonprofits. We are looking forward to onboarding our 2024-2025 team!

Members serve full-time, August, 2024 - June 2025. and receive a range of benefits, including:

  • Living Stipend, totaling up to $29,000 pre-tax, distributed biweekly
  • Health Insurance, including mental healthcare coverage

  • Subsidized rentals available in Watsonville ($400/mo)
  • Ongoing training and professional development support, and national MidYear conference in Baltimore, MD.
  • Combined Segal Education Award and California for All Education Awards for a total of $10,000, pre-tax to be used for higher education expenses.

About this service position location:

Lunch Program (up to 6 hours/week)

  • Meal prep, to include cutting vegetables and assembling lunches
  • Monitor and remove food waste from lunch plates
  • Distribute/serve lunches to clients
  • Aggregate and post lunch participation numbers monthly

Pantry Program (up to 12 hours/week)

  • Pack and distribute pantry bags
  • Sort produce
  • Help unload food from Second Harvest Food Bank
  • Pick-up grocery rescue food
  • Aggregate and post pantry participation numbers monthly

In-kind Donation Procurement (up to 30 hours/term)

  • Organize restaurant week in January
  • Keep Little Library stocked
  • Record in kind donations

Volunteer and Community Outreach Programs (20-28 hours/week)

  • Maintain social media accounts with timely, relevant posts, stories, and live feeds
  • Connect with local radio stations
  • Participate in on-going collaboration with community resources, referral sources, and agencies
  • Attend relevant, value-added workshops related to community engagement and food security
  • Maintain client resource bulletin board in both Spanish and English
  • Create educational and outreach content and implement events within the community
  • Collaborate with volunteer coordinator to thank and recognize volunteer participation
  • Mobilize volunteer support and recruitment with on-line platforms and in-person events
  • Develop press/other media releases to promote organizational activities and events
  • Help with community and volunteer newsletters
  • Design flyers in Canva and laminate
  • Keep clients’ needs at the heart of all we do, every day

Additional Project(s) A few ideas (50+ hours/term)

  • Educational presentations about food insecurity/food waste
  • Plan food drives
  • Organize a fruit tree picking co-op

Position prerequisites

  • Must by proficient in conversational English/Spanish
  • Computer skills (Excel, basic social media tools)
  • Driver's License
  • Adaptability
  • AmeriCorps members must be over 18, with high school diploma/GED, and a US Citizen or legal permanent resident
  • All AmeriCorps members complete a FBI and Truescreen background checks during pre-enrollment

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $2,636.36 per month
