Lot Guard / Building Security / Building Monitor / Special Events

The Northern Michigan University Police Department is looking to hire NMU student employees with start dates beginning August 2024. Shifts vary depending on the job position.

We are now accepting applications for the following positions:

 

Lot Guard/Ticket Writer

Sunday – Saturday: 10 pm to 3 am

Description:

  • Under Police Sergeant/Officer supervision, conduct foot patrol of campus parking lots and other areas as directed.   Issue parking citations to assist with enforcing NMU’s parking ordinances.

Duties:

  • Provide enforcement of NMU’s parking policy.

 

  • Advises the Police Department Dispatcher via radio of suspicious situations or individuals.

 

  • Maintains radio/cell phone communications with the Police Department Dispatcher for location checks.

 

  • Performs other related duties, as well as special parking and security details, as requested by supervisors.

 

 Building Security

Sunday – Saturday: 10 pm – 2 am

Description:

  • Under Police Sergeant/Officer supervision, performs building security checks of campus buildings on foot or in a department vehicle. Must possess a valid Driver’s License. 

 

Duties:

  • Check exterior doors and windows to ensure they are closed and secured.

 

  • Secure individual buildings and rooms as required.

 

  • Maintain a daily activity log and building status sheet indicating times buildings are secured and problems located, if any.

 

  • Maintain radio contact with the Police Department Dispatcher as required.

 

  • Advises the Police Department Dispatcher via radio of suspicious situations or individuals.

 

  • Performs other related duties, as well as special parking and security details, as requested by supervisors.

 

Building Monitor

Saturdays/Sundays:  Hours will vary

Description:

  • Under Police Sergeant/Officer supervision, monitor the status of buildings open after hours for student use. 

Duties:

 

  • Maintain a presence in after-hours buildings and conduct hourly rounds.

 

  • Complete hourly attendance logs.

 

  • Secure individual buildings and rooms as required.

 

  • Maintain radio contact with the Police Department Dispatcher as required.

 

  • Advises the Police Department Dispatcher via radio of suspicious situations or individuals.

 

  • Performs other related duties, as well as special parking and security details, as requested by supervisors.

 

Special Events

Workdays and hours will vary. Special Events are typically held on weekends during evening hours but may also occur during weekdays and morning/afternoon hours.

Description:

  • Under Police Sergeant/Officer and Student Coordinator/Assistant Coordinator supervision, conduct parking, security, and other related duties at sporting and special events on campus. Student employees work in pairs or groups. 

Duties:

  • Conduct parking details, traffic control, and related sporting and special events duties.

 

  • Provide security/observation services at sporting and special events.

 

  • Maintain contact with other Special Events employees via radio.

 

  • Advises the Police Department Dispatcher and Officers of potentially hazardous situations via radio.

 

 

Hourly Wage:

  • $11.18 per hour (For all positions)

 

Work Hours:

  • Student employees are permitted to work multiple positions within the police department with permission from a supervisor

 

  • Student employees can work up to 24 hours per week (University policy)

 

  • Student employees may be required to work other positions as directed by a supervisor to help assist the department in fulfilling services provided to the campus community.
