The Office of the Dean of Students is committed to offering a graduate student or, in some limited circumstances, an undergraduate student an opportunity to serve as a member of the Dean of Students Office staff and a member of our advocacy and outreach team. All of the interns in the Dean of Students Office will have a specific responsibility in support of mental health and wellness and increasing health seeking behaviors among students. 

Intern Responsibilities

The internship responsibilities may include:

  • Brightspace Course Enhancements: The Dean of Students Office is responsible for providing education to all new University of Akron students as well as providing access for all returning and graduate University of Akron students. The courses include training required by an Ohio Law referred to as Collin’s Law about hazing prevention and as required by the federal law Violence Against Women’s Act. The Brightspace course will be maintained and enhanced with the refinement, of course, learning aids and tools. 
  • Outreach and Engagement: The Dean of Students Office is responsible for responding to approximately 200 Title IX reports and 300 CARE referrals each year. The referrals are submitted by students, faculty, and staff. Each year it is necessary to educate faculty, staff, academic departments, and student leaders about the services provided. This outreach is necessary to sustain the use of the reporting tools, which in-turn ensures students have access to support and services. Outreach activities may include visiting offices, departments, or student organizations to inform community members about services, reporting tools and how to access them. 
  • Mental Health and Wellness Cross Training: The Ohio Department of Higher Education has provided the University of Akron with a grant to facilitate increased mental health seeking behaviors. Training responsibilities will include ensuring the collaborating partners and Student Affairs Departments are aware of all of the grant related programs and initiatives.  Additional activities could include projects related to social media engagement, development of learning tools like instructional videos, outreach through ZipMail and Email Digest, and other forms of strategic communication and marketing. 
  • Creation of Learning Aids and Promotional Resources: The Dean of Students Office works to ensure other faculty, staff, and students are aware of programs occurring across the campus or services that are available to students. By creating and disseminating advertisement and awareness tools, the office supports initiatives from the Office of the Dean of Students or programs developed by institutional partners such as Rediscover Race Week, The Black and Brown Male Summit, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, National Depression Screening Day, Stalking Awareness Month, and Women’s History Month. These initiatives require awareness campaigns with messaging built through bulletin boards, social media posts, electronic bulletin boards, curated displays, and campus installments. 
  • Officer and Secretary of the Sexual Assault and Violence Education Team: The vision of the SAVE Team is to create a community safe from sexual violence through education, outreach, and support. The team consists of students, faculty, and staff across campus and meets regularly throughout the year. The intern has the option to serve as secretary and student leader within the SAVE team to ensure accurate and timely communication within the team.
  • Certified Peer Education and Trainer: The Dean of Students Office works to offer students faculty, and staff training in collaboration with colleagues across campus and with Hope Healing creates opportunities for advanced learning and instruction. An intern with advanced skills and commitment may have the opportunity to be trained in some of the leadership programs facilitated on campus or through the Dean of Students Office such as: OneLove, Mental Health First Aid, or certification through affiliated programs with Hope and Healing the Survivor Resource Center.
  • Research and Assessment: The Dean of Students Office is responsible for multiple research and assessment projects, including assessing direct services provided to students by team members, conducting annual benchmarking surveys, conducting biennial campus climate surveys, conducting focus groups to better understand students’ thoughts and experiences, and accounting of aggregate data collected while providing services directly to students . The intern may be able to assist with the preparation, and implementation, of IRB applications for research and assessment projects to help community members better understand services provided and to ensure those services continue to improve following the collection of feedback on an ongoing basis. 

All members of the Dean of Students team, including the Dean of Students serve as members of the office team. Team meetings that provide an opportunity for the group to better understand each other’s priorities, progress, and job tasks. The intern will serve as a member of the team and will be welcome to participate but they will report to the Dean of Students and be supervised by the Dean of Students. [1]

The intern will join the Dean of Students staff in these responsibilities when they are in the Dean of Students Office and will be welcomed to join team members in representing the office in engagements across campus. Interns may be asked to assist with specific projects and assignments coordinated by other members of the Dean of Students Team and will be encouraged to share internets in identify projects consistent with professional interests as it relates to the mission of the Office of the Dean of Students.  


Areas of Concentration

During Summer 2024 the Dean of Students Office is looking to higher and identify 2-3 interns. All applicants are welcome. Students with specific interest in these areas of concentration are (1) sexual violence prevention, (2) promotion of mental health seeking and wellness behaviors, or (3) cross cultural and persuasive communication are encouraged to apply. 

2024 Summer Projects

Interns who are able to begin working this summer may have the opportunity to assist with the following projects:

  • Development of “Know the Code” presentation
  • SAVE Team “Consent Card” program
  • Pregnancy modifications required by Title IX regulations
  • Revisions to “POWER Bystander Intervention” program
  • Review of Campus Climate Data from SAVE Survey
  • “Mental Health and Wellness Road Show”
  • Program to educate community regarding Pronouns and Gender Expression
  • Benchmarking CARE Team and Threat Assessment training
  • Student Greif and Recovery program

Help with creation of instructional videos:

  • “What is the SAVE Team”
  • “What happens after a Title IX Report”
  • “How do I get connected with Hope and Healing”
  • “What is a SANE Exam”
  • “How do I prepare for my Title IX Interview”
  • “What is the difference between a University adviser and an adviser of choice”

Compensation

Compensation will be provided at the rate of $16.00 an hour and enough work will be provided such that the interns are able to complete all of the hours required by an academic program in as much as no more than 29 hours are worked during any one week period. 

Interns must meet the requirements of student employment positions outlined in the University of Akron Student Employment Handbook.

Responsibilities of Team Members:

  • Dean of Students: Mike Strong, responsible for supervision, oversight and leadership of the Dean of Students Team and office operations. 
  • Assistant Dean of Students: Jacqueline Fausnight, responsible for coordinating outreach and support following Title IX reports or reports of Gender-Based Misconduct as well as leadership of the Sexual Assault and Violence Education (SAVE) Team. 
  • Case Manager: Greg Luli, responsible for coordinating outreach and support following CARE reports.
  • Coordinator for Students Success Administration: Natalie Mowad, the coordinator is responsible for receiving students seeking support, administering office operations, and entering case data into Maxient Database

[1] For interns in the School of Social Work arrangements will be explored to allow for appropriate supervision by a licensed professional.
