Library Support Lead (Cataloging Metadata and Digitization)

The Library Support Lead position offers students higher-level library work experience. Library Support Leads do specialized tasks requiring careful attention and use of tools and/or software that are not in common use. The lead student employees have advanced skills including, for example, attention to detail, high level software skills, and/or experience working as part of a team to complete project-related research.  Library Support Leads are generally upper-level undergraduates or graduate students.

Job Description: The Library Support Lead in Cataloging Metadata Digitization (CMD) will be learning basic copy cataloging of monographic materials and completing other projects as assigned under the supervision of CMD Unit Librarians and staff. Projects may cover a broad spectrum of CMD functions and may include some or all of the following: learning to work in the Alma library system, learning to update holdings and item records, searching OCLC Connexion, working with foreign language materials, learning packing and shipping procedures. Student must be able to work relatively independently once training is complete, have attention to detail, and ability to work in a variety of workflows depending on the project or the materials.

Library Support Lead Level Tasks:

  • Copy cataloging in OCLC Connexion and Alma.
  • Searching, identifying correct records, and downloading them from Connexion to Alma.
  • Updating holdings and item records.
  • Working with foreign language materials; language expertise not necessarily required.

Other Tasks:

  • Database maintenance.
  • Packing and preparing materials for shipments.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Justification for the Library Support Lead title (Why you feel the Lead title best fits the majority of duties): 

The Library Support Lead title best fits the majority of duties in this position since it requires a basic familiarity with bibliographic, holdings and item records, basic copy cataloging of monographs, the flexibility to work on multiple projects, and ability to learn various departmental workflows. The student may also be required to work with foreign language materials in both Roman and non-Roman scripts. Student will work under direct supervision for training, and be expected to work relatively independently once training is completed.

Qualification(s):

  • Enrollment in or satisfactory completion of Beginning Cataloging & Classification (SLIS 6250).

or

  • Enrollment in or satisfactory completion of Rare Books Cataloging (SLIS 6255)

# hrs/wk:  10 hrs/week during Fall and Spring semesters, up to 40 hrs/week during breaks and summer
