Firefighter
- You will perform structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities.
- You will direct/deploy firefighting operational processes, equipment, and duties during emergency and non-emergency situations.
- You will perform wildland firefighting by suppressing wildfires using heavy-duty vehicles/equipment, and/or constructing firelines in hazardous conditions.
- You will initiate established medical protocols in providing basic life support.
- You will perform the following Technical Rescue functions: rope, vehicle and machinery, confined space, structural collapse, and wilderness.
- You will perform hazard and risk assessment techniques in completing initial incident analysis.
- You will select and apply the proper techniques or procedures for fire suppression and emergency situations.

- You will be required to wear a uniform and use all safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures. You will be required to wear personal protective equipment and personal fire protection equipment during your work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and will fall under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current CPR and First Aid certification.
Qualifications
GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department/brigade; 2) Performing rescue operations; 3) Detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; 4) Controlling hazardous materials incidents; 5) Driving and operating firefighting vehicles; and 6) Performing non-invasive emergency medical procedures.

Shipboard Firefighting or Rescue: Incumbent must obtain Land Based Marine Firefighter certification within 24 months.
Wildland Firefighting: Qualifications will be in accordance with The National Incident Management System Wildland Fire Qualification System Guide, PMS 310-1.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The duties of this position are physically demanding and require a physically able employee. Ability to lift and move heavy objects, such as charged fire hoses, fire extinguishers, equipment, incapacitated persons, and litter patients. Must be able to wear protective clothing, such as firefighter ensembles weighing 50 - 60 pounds. Climbs ladders and works at various heights. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. To meet these demands, physical fitness training is required on more than a weekly basis as reflected in department guidance and instruction. Required physical training will be completed during duty hours and on each available shift.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employee is exposed to out-of-control fires, HAZMAT spills, or possible explosions. May suffer from burns, dehydration, and other effects of heat; smoke inhalation, heavy protective clothing, falling materials, or explosions. Subject to physical injury and sensory damage from firefighting activities, exposure to HAZMAT and high noise levels. Must deal with victims in emergency situations that may be in varying stages of fright, panic, injury, and shock. May be exposed to infectious disease. There may be hazards while operating or riding fire trucks at high speeds under adverse conditions. The employee works outside in all types of weather conditions.
Education
In lieu of specialized experience you may qualify at the GS-05 level with the following education substitute:
Successful completion of a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related field of study leading to a bachelor degree.
