Recycling Center Operator

RECYCLING CENTER OPERATOR 

(TRUCK DRIVER / LABORER I)

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH 

DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & PROTECTION

 

SALARY: $37,967.74 per year 

 

PURPOSE:  The purpose of this position is to drive truck and assist in processing recyclable materials. Position also oversees operation of recycling during absences and vacations of supervisors. The work is performed under the supervision of the Recycling Center Coordinator.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

  • Cleans up illegal roadside and related promiscuous dumpsites, and transports waste and recyclable.
  • Answers questions regarding Recycling Center operations and assists citizens in recycling.
  • Assists Recycling Center Supervisor in overall operations of the recycling center.
  • Operates a variety of equipment including but not limited to: Forklift/ Bobcat with multiple attachments; baling equipment; compacting equipment; crushing and grinding equipment; hoist and loading equipment; Freon Recovery equipment.
  • Recovers refrigerant from refrigerators, dehumidifiers, and other small appliances.
  • Operates a variety of equipment including but not limited to: vehicles requiring a CDL Class B license; standard hand tools, utility pick-up truck; lawn mower, etc.
  • Inspects recycling bins for contaminants.
  • Clears debris from the Recycling Center.
  • Performs equipment repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Performs grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Performs solid waste and sewage waste truck inspections.
  • Assist with off-site recycling, waste collection, and educational events. 
  • Collect household hazardous waste from residents and safely identify, sort, and process waste for shipment in accordance with DOT and vendor requirements. 
  • Supervises volunteers, interns, temporary employees, and community service workers.
  • Records money received, prepares receipts, and prepares daily bank deposit.
  • Cannot telecommute.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Education
    • General/technical high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Certifications
    • A valid commercial class B driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
    • EPA certification for Freon recover technician required or attained within 6 months of employment.
    • OSHA 40-hour class required within 12 months of employment. 
  • Job Experience
    • One to two years equipment/truck driving experience.
    • Employment is contingent on successfully passing a full criminal background check.
