2017-2018 GWIL Scholars Business Boot Camp

GWIL Scholars is an innovative career development boot camp designed to help Gustavus students explore and prepare for a potential career in business.

Through this intense three day boot camp you will:

• Get a taste of what it’s like to work in Finance, Strategy, Marketing, HR, and Sales by tackling real business problems through case studies.
• Visit a variety of Twin Cities companies and experience different corporate cultures.
• Build your skills in negotiations, communications, teamwork, and relationship building through hands-on exercises.
• Kickstart your internship or job search with career development activities.
• Meet talented women business leaders, build connections and HAVE FUN!

Not a management or economics major? No specific preparation or experience is required for the boot camp. GWIL Scholars is open to history, English, psychological science, art, geology, and other non-business majors who are open to learning how their liberal arts degrees can translate to a business career.

This is a great opportunity for 40 Gustavus students to get insight into the world of business. 

FAQs
Is GWIL Scholars only for management or economics majors? No. One of the goals of GWIL Scholars is to encourage non-business majors to explore business career options. Students with all majors are encouraged to apply to the program.

Is GWIL Scholars only for female students? The program is open to all students enrolled at Gustavus. The program was designed to encourage and equip women to pursue business careers so many sessions, speakers, and panels will include a focus on women in business.

I don’t know what I want to do after graduation and I’m not sure if I want to pursue a business career. Am I good fit for GWIL Scholars? Yes. The program will give you the opportunity to learn more about HR, Marketing, Finance, Consulting, and Sales career paths. You’ll have the chance experience the type of work you’d do in each business area and determine if you might enjoy that career field.

I haven’t taken any finance or business classes. Will I be able to keep up at the boot camp? Absolutely. The boot camp will challenge you to apply your liberal arts education in new ways to business case studies, but there are no specific prerequisites to attend.

What will we do at the GWIL Scholars boot camp? The boot camp will include a mix of speakers, activities, case studies, panel discussions, and career development sessions all focused on helping you explore and prepare for a potential career in business. It will be interactive, hands-on learning and lots of fun.

What companies will we be visiting during the boot camp? The boot camp will be held at companies throughout the Twin Cities. Corporate hosts are being finalized but the sessions will likely rotate among marketing, consulting, finance, health care, and retail companies. Scholars will get a chance to experience varied corporate environments to better understand what might fit them best.

How will we get to the Twin Cities? Will we stay overnight? Transportation will be provided from campus to the GWIL Scholars boot camp locations in the Twin Cities. If overnight stays are required, housing will also be provided.

How much does the GWIL Scholars program cost? Gustavus Women in Leadership is generously sponsoring the GWIL Scholars program. Participants will be charged a nominal fee of $20 for participation.

What is the criteria for selecting GWIL Scholars? We are looking for students from any major who are curious to learn more about how their liberal arts degree can translate to a business career. Students must be in their sophomore, junior, or senior year.

How many Scholars will be selected? The program can accommodate 36 Scholars.

What are the expectations of GWIL Scholars? GWIL Scholars are expected to participate fully in the three day boot camp, and be willing to share their experiences. Before the boot camp, all GWIL Scholars will complete the Strong Interest Inventory and attend a debrief session with Career Development. Scholars will also have a small number of pre-reads to prepare for boot camp and some follow- up activities to complete post-boot camp.

How do I apply to GWIL Scholars? You can apply through Handshake.

When are applications due? When will I find out if I am selected as a GWIL scholar? Applications are due by November 27. Applicants will be notified by December 2 as to whether they’ve been selected for the program.

I’m interested in GWIL Scholars but I would have to miss one day of the boot camp. Should I still apply? No. GWIL Scholars are required to attend all three days of the boot camp.

Who is leading the GWIL Scholars Boot Camp? GWIL is partnering with CareerPrep, a Twin Cities coaching and training firm, to lead and develop the GWIL Scholars Program.
