Conservation Program Manager

The Conservation Program Manager is a full-time, salaried position responsible for the oversight and coordination for Great Rivers Greenway's conservation strategy and implementation. Responsibilities include overseeing existing conservation strategy, guiding habitat management of GRG owned property, managing conservation partner programs and ensuring the success of a conservation program that allows the community to engage in activities that improve greenway conditions and habitat. A major component of this role is the management of a large scale volunteer stewardship program designed to engage the community and provide alternative human resources to Great Rivers Greenway's operations.

 

The Conservation Program Manager directly supervises the Conservation Coordinator.

SALARY RANGE: $65,245 - 94,606

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

    Develop, monitor and implement a conservation program engaging in habitat improvement projects and cooperative programs that provide habitat management and maintenance.

    Oversee conservation partner programs (ex. AmeriCorps St. Louis, Missouri Botanical Gardens Outdoor Leadership Corps, Adopt-A-Greenway) that perform ongoing maintenance and management of habitat and conservation projects.

    Collaborate with direct teammates, staff across all departments and municipal and organizational partners to plan, implement monitor and maintain conservation projects

    Manage and motivate direct report(s) including recruitment, orientation, coaching, development and performance management.

    Manage vendors and contracted services including procurement, contract development, invoicing and quality assurance.

    Develop and maintain a conservation volunteer program that engages the community and provides supplemental resources for greenway operations. The program will consistently demonstrate a culture of courtesy, inclusivity, respect and professionalism to staff, volunteers and the community.

    Establish clear expectations and desired outcomes with partners and team members at the conception of projects through planning and design process to ultimately result in an excellent user experience

    Continuously champion goals and maintain relationships with partners, stakeholders, vendors and members of the community to get feedback, ensure buy-in and mitigate risks

    follow best practices and standards of care for conservation efforts as they relate to design, community engagement, long-term care and other organizational policies and procedures.

    Follow policy and process to establish budgets and timelines using the project controls system to track and monitor progress and identify risks

    Coordinate with regulatory agencies and follow all permitting and compliance requirements

    Advance the mission and vision of Great Rivers Greenway by researching best practices, leveraging alternative resources and serving the region as a whole

    Investigate and utilize alternative resources ranging from partnering, in-kind resources, federal, state and local grants, private foundations and cost-saving measures - working with teams and partners, including the Great Rivers Greenway Foundation, to evaluate and seek opportunities to leverage resources.

    Serve on local, community and regional committees and initiatives as appropriate to represent GRG and coordinate with other efforts and initiatives.

 

POSITION QUALIFICATION AND REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education/Training:

 

    Bachelor’s degree in natural resources management, natural sciences, parks and recreation management, outdoor recreation, environmental education or related field.

 

Experience:

 

    Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible management experience related to parks and recreation, environmental education, outdoor recreation or related field. Municipal or government agency experience is preferred.

 

Skills and Abilities:

 

    Familiarity and experience planning and executing long-range strategic plans

    Comfortable with the outdoors with demonstrable skills in areas of outdoor pursuits, special events management and/or natural sciences interpretation.

    Experience planning and initiating conservation projects and programs

    Experience planning and managing volunteer programs

    Firm grasp of championing project goals, managing budget, timelines and deliverables with internal and external partners, vendors and stakeholders

    Demonstrated experience in community development, natural resource management, construction, contracts and project management

    Self-directed with sound judgment

    Ability to complete tasks in a timely and accurate manner with little supervision

    Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse team

    Ability to reflect and represent organizational values

    Efficient, self-starter who thrives in fast-paced work environment

    Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely

    Team-oriented with a commitment to sustaining strong, productive working partnerships with staff, board members, volunteers and community.

 

Computer Skills:

 

    Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

    Experience with web-based GIS/asset inventory applications

    Working knowledge of project management software

    Ability to learn software applications as necessary

 

Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:

 

    PC, tablets and associated software, commercial printer, telephone, copier, tablet

    Familiarity with tools and equipment associated with habitat and conservations management

    Demonstrated use of hand tools (loppers, hand saws, backpack sprayers) and light power equipment (chainsaw, brush cutter) used in habitat management in order to guide programs and staff

 

License(s)/Certification(s) Required:

 

    Driver's license with good driving record

    Professional development and licensing applicable to roles and responsibilities encouraged

 

Work Environment:

 

    Primarily normal office conditions with moderate noise level.

    Requires some field work in various weather conditions.

    Possible exposure to loud noises and dangers associated with construction such as moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles and related risks
